Spear of Caliban build WIP
« on: March 16, 2021, 09:34:13 PM »
So begins another weapon upgrade for brother Lucien. He's getting a plasma cannon for his armory. Not just any plasma cannon mind you. But a very special relic weapon from the past. This started out as an stl. file that I put through Armor Smith and scaled it way up. 45 inches long, 18 high and about 16-18inches wide. I'm making this out of PVC foam board or sintra as it's also called. Trying to keep this thing way light as it's going to be a beast. I was able to unfold this pepakura style and make patterns to cut PVC plates out and cya glue together. Here's progress so far
https://photos.app.goo.gl/MZFf2WXcoaiDLuzj6

https://photos.app.goo.gl/pKoeo3Q6iyjgYHux7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/2WhDHUB9wQocHnTLA
In the last couple shots you can see the beginning of the inner plywood frame and pistol grip handle with Lucien's glove and forearm for scale. There's still about 10-12inches more of muzzle to stick out the front. Lots of electronics and LED's are getting stuffed into this. I have an ardruino board for the lighting and found the sound file from the Spacehulk game for the cannon shot. I've got 12v USB batteries to run everything so it should last for a while. Stay tuned for lots more...

Just a couple screenshots to show you where this is headed

https://photos.app.goo.gl/EkARQR7vzbDJPkpE7
There is a red version also that I'm kinda sold on. Not sure yet

Progress updates. This is starting to take shape rather quick

https://photos.app.goo.gl/VSwerivZjdfjdAoM8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/D3xQSQhMy31VfWC8A

https://photos.app.goo.gl/UG29EcBoMzWUPKWE6
Pics show the inner frame work that has the handle brackets tied in. That will have the strap bolted to it for my forearm. I couldn't count on this thin foam board to carry the load. Also in the pics is a shot of some mechanical widget that goes underneath on the back side of the barrel shroud. Made of PVC tube, Eva and cardstock plus a few scrounged items. Stay tuned for more...

Update pics. Plasma containment cells starting to come together
https://photos.app.goo.gl/CjhvCJTbeFnABBmF8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/4kwM6znP3DdmrCyG7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/ajQde6z7tqLUevvb8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/qXqH13hnQiNSgSEc6

https://photos.app.goo.gl/Uxc5rpsUXbnsn8PK9
Now, inside the top of the can, I have a plexiglass window to let the light shine out through the end. The plan is to gouge out the skull's eyes and nostrils so you can see the blue plasma glow from inside the container. I've got some really bright 12v interior lights that are ice blue to give the glow. I'll probably put some thin foam packing material to help diffuse the light and disperse it a little more. I've also found 12v USB batteries that are pretty small and have 5v and 12v outputs. Which wlli be perfect to run the ardruino board also. Stay tuned for more...

Progress for today. Gouged out some eyes and got some led pucks in the mail today
https://photos.app.goo.gl/eLkqqru5ps3w2kq2A
The pic was in darkness but my phone picked up all the light coming out as white. It's actually quite blue. Also finished  the other cans except for the lids
https://photos.app.goo.gl/i7RYww6xGbLFVCnH8
Not much, but progress continues. Stay tuned...

Sideways progress report. Knocked together the bayonet that goes on the front. This thing is 26" long

https://photos.app.goo.gl/ikfX2gxQ4JVqnZHk9

https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZbKQK7zNo6RYRBzu6
I still have a few small details to add yet. There's a bracket that mounts on the handle that will allow it to slide into a lug underneath the cannons nose just like a rifle. Also some etching on the center panels on the blade. Stay tuned for more...

Bayonet is finished except for paint
https://photos.app.goo.gl/5bywUZT5mp6fLbpa6

https://photos.app.goo.gl/ph4egEc9gaR1YXRF7
Just a few little scribbles on the hilt parts. Also got some rotary etchable brushed brass sheets in the mail and tried my hand at etching an adornment panel for the rear, right side panel on the cannon. This is right from the Spacehulk Deathwing game.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/ywuiRkrZh2dKNVSD8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/r6qw9KGfBysASkXA8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/QQuNqhkt2SPwDpHw7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/UXgEbL2sTT4VdF3dA
Now this was made using an electric scriber like you would use to etch your name on tools or other various things. It took me about 7 hrs to do, I thought it was gonna be way more. I went back in with some acrylic paint and brought in some deeper Brown and black tones to age it somewhat. The background is acrylics also. This was glued up to a 1/4in. piece of PVC foam board to give it some thickness and depth. The border will get painted gold before attaching. Now I can get on to the main body of the cannon. Stay tuned for more...

Finished up the paint and wiring on the skull's for the most part
https://photos.app.goo.gl/6DG7fuVhSUMbeQ4dA

https://photos.app.goo.gl/EDYLGFJdjDL33jgR8
This was in complete darkness. The inside of the can has a strip of blue window tint and a piece of really thin packing foam (I think they call it plastizote or something). The foam helps to diffuse the light from the LED's. Thanx for lookin, stay tuned for more...

Got the side cans that hold the plasma cells together and detailed. Assembled 1 side and temp mounted the cells
https://photos.app.goo.gl/geDpT9ZE5eV9UCa86

https://photos.app.goo.gl/zQbH9xKpnoBhjaxQ7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/qGo5uiHx6xELrqw4A
The side of this thing was kicking my ass! It had to be partial glued and heat formed as I went. Compound curves and non cooperating PVC board made for a tough time but I stuck with it. The side got cut out just like a pep file with all the crazy cuts and angles to make the curves. Had some gaps in places, but I glued scrap PVC from the back and filled with gap filling cya glue. A round or 2 of Bondo will even everything out.

I also ordered what I thought was corrugated split wire loom for all the cables. But when it arrived it was not what I expected. It was a nylon wrap that's soft and flexible. It worked out way better as it's super light, holds it's shape and looks like cable! 3 birds with 1 bolter round!
https://photos.app.goo.gl/mXxtSnHxZMxiy9eY8
I bought 3 different sizes for all the cables and it should weather up nicely. Stay tuned for more...

Lots O progress to share. Got both sides attached to the cowl (for lack of a better term) and the top plasma can mount also
https://photos.app.goo.gl/NMxh4zcK55ABoe5q7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/9gZ6Mz5vBuZ8cFK49

https://photos.app.goo.gl/fVcNQxy6r8M2mc528
Now you'll notice the luan plywood and the chunk of 3/4ply sticking out. I cut the inner frame long because I didn't know what I was exactly going to need for length. I measured in armorsmith and came up with about 39" to the edge of the cowl, give or take. I was pretty close once everything stacked up. The 39" mark is just underneath the luan. 1 thing I did think about is assembling the front and being able to wire up all the lights, electronics and speakers. If I glued this thing shut I'd be screwed. So I made the plywood removable with a mount block glued to the frame spine.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/w6yyJWgt1uApUEp26
This will allow me to put some screws through the muzzle once it's all built. That way I can make all the wire connections and tuck it all in. Also if I ever have to get back inside. There's an access panel on the side where the switches are, but it's kinda small to be reaching way up in there. Stay tuned for more...

Progress report for today. Lots going on and this is getting very close to painting time. The front cowl is closed in and finishing up on the muzzle
https://photos.app.goo.gl/XqQdwTFwzdn2nJmH8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/D25v3mvHTNZsaY1S8
I glued some pink insulation foam to the front luan cover and sanded it to match the curve of the cowl, (think cone shaped). I then cut some heavy black card stock and glued the strips around the edge to help hide the seam of the front plate. It turned out like the cowl flaps on a ww2 fighter plane.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/kJGFq8duiBMzwdNR7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/xQtq4EjvWzbgE6HH8
This thing fits really snug. I'll put a couple screws through the middle by the square hole and also 4 aluminum clamp details around the outside to hold it on.
At the moment, the front muzzle is nearing the finish line also. I used some large, round, cardboard tube cut in half and some luan pieces to shape the muzzle and covered it in Eva foam for the details.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/qseK3wyj4fyfu6CDA
This is glued down to the cowl plate. Inside you can see the structure and extra wood pieces used as glueing cleats to add strength. You can also see in the bottom part is a wood stanchion that will support the bayonet lug. It'll give me something solid to bolt into. The rectangle window is where the LED strips will mount. Here's some detail shots of the outside
https://photos.app.goo.gl/VoLnWGkPRXmrwwpx5

https://photos.app.goo.gl/Z7SZ7i9vHrS3onfg7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/FjtGYhzYrAg8tQ9s6
And finally, the barrel taking shape. It's formed of PVC foam board.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/GNWZC2ccho8vPsxT6

https://photos.app.goo.gl/f5EkzhQd3EHuthZFA
Down the business end shot
https://photos.app.goo.gl/fJUTk8eLay9Ey39JA
You should be able to see the entire flash from the strip LED's when this thing goes off. And let me tell you, they're friggin bright (like you're seeing blue Smurfs floating in the air)
I've got the pistol grip in the beginning stages and need to start on the plasma chamber yet but getting ever closer. Stay tuned for more...

Solid progress on the muzzle and barrel details. I knocked out all the parts for 1 of the compensators which consists of a set of stabilizer wings and a bigger barrel shroud. Here's the pieces
https://photos.app.goo.gl/CbPoDuS48MsP4hPX8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/mafKfo3PawX3cfA8A

https://photos.app.goo.gl/5UpqocVgoKWYowzo9
Also got the bayonet lug mounted
https://photos.app.goo.gl/2WEr6GgBvqeMnymG7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/y4HLqBw1rBC2s9jo6
In that shot you can see a small rare earth magnet that holds the bayonet and the compensator lug on. It's pretty strong, but you can click the pieces off with your thumb.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/cscr6ik3ASwNNZv97

https://photos.app.goo.gl/6qm4PfatswhBnzXe8
Rediculous, right?
Next is the stabilizer shroud. I didn't get too many in progress shots, I was too engrossed in making it. But it's fairly simple construction
https://photos.app.goo.gl/nNmxuoAwTEYsooQD9

https://photos.app.goo.gl/WMDGxUSgVW2BgzKC9

https://photos.app.goo.gl/mx59Gv2dzYa8HuCfA

https://photos.app.goo.gl/pimKVsr7MLBYZBdh8

Some of the smaller, inner details

https://photos.app.goo.gl/2FtaggotWifNvXzW6

https://photos.app.goo.gl/QtNsGmrX6Zr6nVHp8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/DrQaRhr5vhyxERqP8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/WYMux9kfbq626K3W9
I have some aluminum shroud clamps to make to help hold the main cowl on. 4 actually will function, and 4 are just for looks. Still have a lot to do yet, but major strides being made. Stay tuned for more...

Finished up the details for the muzzle and barrel. The aluminum clamp pieces turned out better than anticipated
https://photos.app.goo.gl/WFHorDus9CAzd96D8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/PikLTSZYRW4pWFjq8
You'll notice in the pic a small knurled insert on the vise. I picked these up a long while ago with no particular plans for them . Well they fit exactly what I was looking for.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/aN3AHam4Bd7sUC3Z6
I glued these in the cowl to hold all the clamps in place. I made sure that I had a double thickness of foam board to glue into for strength
https://photos.app.goo.gl/mp5WBwE7dcMJ2SfM7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/pLHc2dEz1uPVhVCk7
Here's some pics with the clamps in place
https://photos.app.goo.gl/gUYkuBmsc5QKnm1z8

https://photos.app.goo.gl/DRY9VsxAchVgvzxK7

https://photos.app.goo.gl/QYqTKC1zK7oZrTVh6
And here's some of the full monty with all of the front pieces mocked up as they stand
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ur6aTAvY2pAd6QgD6

https://photos.app.goo.gl/XxqjaZb6vuXQoXmU9

https://photos.app.goo.gl/d1vzpRKGLrwL1yGF9

https://photos.app.goo.gl/dafzDMzNSYPdqgmo8
I also used the same threaded inserts in the top fin to be able to assemble it after the painting. I thought about glueing it home, but this will work out better in the end
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ng1bEKtoxcEmtCzD9

https://photos.app.goo.gl/nAVwWrv8VE1nhkUBA
Lots more to do, so stay tuned...
