Ultracal 30
« on: November 22, 2011, 11:37:00 PM »
It seems that the only one that imported Ultracal 30 (some sort of gypsum) to sweden has stopped since they had to buy in to much.

So is anyone here from the states or other country that they have this in? And is it possible to buy a bag or two and ship to sweden and what would it cost with shipping and all?

I have some alignat that I will use to make a mold of my head and I want to cast my head/bust in Ultracal 30 so that it can survive in the oven later on. When I have a bust of myself, I will be able to sculpt masks and cast them in foamlatex so they fit me perfectly. This will be great to sculpt some alien masks. Or I might just make a bionic eye on the bust or other things that is much easier to do on a bust than on myself.

There is Monster Makers.  Not sure if they ship outside the US, but you can always contact them.

DAMN.
apparently there is some bad chemicals in Ultracal 30 that now is forbidden in sweden.
So it's illegal to import the stuff.
Fortunatley I was able to get two 50lbs bags from the last shipment to sweden.

So a warning to those of you that use Ultracal 30 due to toxic chemicals. Sometimes I wish I lived in USA you guys have much looser rules against chemicals and allows much of the stuff that is banned here in sweden

The bad chemicals are primarily if you snort the stuff:

Well the Swedes are keen to sniff all sorts off stuff. I guess it is because they like to honour their king who has a habit of snorting that white stuff while watching naked young ladies with the crown's expense. Too bad that we Finns instead just tend to drink anything with alcohol since we stop getting breast milk.

But back to the issue, it is still in stores in Finland so if you wish to get much cheaper shipping rates i suggest you look it from Finnish hobbystores or USG importer. Not sure if it should for sale still (as I think it is a EU wide ban as most chemical bans are) be but atleast Askartelukulma has it in their shelves but not on their website. Might be worth calling to that store and ask if they can ship it to Sverige because it is Customs duty to know what chemicals are illegal to import, not yours, and therefore not punishable except if it can be used as a drug and because both of our countries are in Schengen pact there will be no customs check for parcels.

Is there any other reason to use only Ultracal 30 except it's very low expansion and it's ability to reproduce small details? Maybe I could suggest you something else if I know wht you are using it for?

I'm going to make a copy of my head at first and maybe other bodyparts after that.
I like ultracal 30, since it's the only one that Iv'e used and it can take really high temeratures. I want to be able to put it in an oven and make latex masks. And from what I have heard ultracal 30 has a much longer lifespan compared to other materials, especially if it is for moulds and stuff.

I want my head in that material so I can sculpt bionic eyes and other things to fit my head perfectly.

I'm starting to think that I might have been misinformed about the ultracal 30 ban. I dont know exactly where she got it from, but it seems that noone else have heard about it. I hope so at least.

My boss at the local animation studio has a contact that was able to get some stuff here. So when he get his bags, he will give me 2 of them as a thanks for all the help I've given him. So I'm set for now at least, but I might need more later on. I have the greatest boss, if I have a couple of minutes to spare on a day I can spend them building lasguns and other things and have full acces to all the tools in the basement.
