Hello all,
sorry I havent posted on here in awhile but with Real Life, the holidays, Klingon costuming, costuming blog and Toys for Tots it has been a busy few month but I have not been idle with the plague priest costume so let me show ya a little of what I have been working on:

After playing around with the respirator for a few i realized the straps looked stupid

So with Halloween winding down I found some awesome deals on skulls. got this big one for $2.00 at party city:

Then I spent a few mins finding a 3D skull I could rotate to see where there was hollow spots. The i attacked them with my new Dremel (Christmas present)

with the respirator I decided to give it a little character and also a little paint:

First coat of paint

Second coat of paint

And now back to the modifications I have made to the skull in the worship of Nurgle
In the embrace of the great Nurgle, I am no longer afraid, for with His pestilential favour I have become that which I once most feared: Death.

Cool detailing.  I like how you added the service studs in there, it makes your character seem quite badass.

Well on to the new stuff.... when I started collecting the stuff for the costume I debated between a plague knife and a plague sword, well after thinking about carrying a sword and banner or knife and banner the knife won out. No need looking like the pack-mule of Nurgle. As Halloween was winding down I found this awesome looking knife at Target for $3.00 dollars:

after looking at it for a few i decided to cut it in half and use part for the knife and the other half for something in the future ( starting to have a huge Bitz box now)

After it setting around the house for a bit i decided to work on it since the weather here in GA has been in the 20's (-5 centigrade). So to go from that metal look to an infected stone look I had to go dig thru my paints box and decided on this color palette:

The first thing I did was spray the blade with beaten silver spray and then dry-brushed on the grey and stone colors to dull up the silver and give it that quartz/granite look:

After the main paint dried i went back over the whole thing with green wash to make it look infected:

1ST COAT:

2ND COAT:

FINAL COAT:

So after the blade dried we added a thick coat of a glossy varnish (gave it that wet look and tied the colors together. After the blade dried and with a little help and advice from my GF (yes I have one so stop laffing) we decided to get some leather strips( $2.77 for 3 feet of it) and wrap the handle. I decided to use some of the brass studs (aka Carpet tacks) I had laying around to help stick the leather to the plastic handle and also to add some details ( yes if you notice everything is in groups of 3 aka Nurgles symbol):

After almost finishing up we decided to use some of the left over leather strip to make a loop to hang from a belt:

So here is the final knife... right now its finished for now:

Looking good. The paint on the knife is good, but I worry that it might need a bit of "pumping up".
By that I mean going for a stronger definition of the cracks and edges where the blade tappers.

This would help it stand out at a distance. The call is your's ,I just think the awesome detail work you did will be lost from 3feet away. Which as I said might be your intention.

Thanks for the advice finnlock... Now the question I have to ask (as a novice costumer) how would I go about doing that??

If I where to try it  I would most likely start by using black marker/paint to help define the cracks
And I would also use it to highlight the edges  where the blade starts to tapers to the edge. If that makes sense.

It would help bring the detail forward and Stand out.

(sorry for my posts if the seem wierd.I'm having computer issues and posting from an iPad and I hate it!)

Another option would be to paint the cracks a different color such as Blood Red or Snot (infected mucus) Green.  And I agree about painting the taper with a highlight.  On the taper what you are going for is the fact that the dark coloring is dirt, gunk, and oxidization.  The taper is where you have sharpened the blade.  Sharpening removes a thin layer of metal, so by extension removes the layer of crud darkening the blade.  You might even try two layers of highlight.  The first covering the entire tapering to mimic the initial blade grinding, and the a second brighter one just on the edge to show where the initial grinding had been honed  recently.

well with the weather here in GA being wet and dark (haven't seen the the sun since Saturday). I have been doing small inside stuff really hoping the weather cleans up a bit this weekend.

So i tried making one of the plague globes that was talked about in another forum and decided that they are wayyyyyyy to heavy to carry on a . All I used to make this was one of the Coke Cola soda bottles, Green aloe vera gel, and fake bugs

Also I have spent a good bit of time this weekend working on my plague mask (goggles and respirator). I found an awesome paint called Blighted gold. This color fit in great with my costume colors. The gunk on the lenses are  just some thraka green wash painted on the glass and let dry...

One of the items I wanted to do with the costume was a very subtle mutation so i decided that the hand holding my banner would have mutated fingers, I'm gonna cover the joints between the fingers and my fingers by wrapping my fingers (along with the rest of my exposed skin) with gauze i bought

Spent yesterday working on the skull that is gonna set on my chest and have the hoses connected to before the enter my. Added a few cheap connectors to the skull ( actually cut-off pieces from my houses)

Just make sure the hoses fit in there

Whoa complements from forgemaster Finn...... now im gonna get a big head, oh wait that's just another mutation. I'm trying to go for a lot of detail work on this one and also trying out a few new techniques that I'm learning by trial and error

well been having a few people asking me how the skull in mask fit in soooo pardon my crappy photo skills but here ya go (imagine there are 2 tubes instead of one):

Decided to try my hand at a little clay work on the skull, thought the NURGLR symbol could be bigger and also make it into my Nurgle Icon instead of a pendant, pin or (insert item here). I'm gonna widen out the hole to match the circles on the symbol
