got a couple questions
« on: July 11, 2011, 04:36:00 AM »
So my friend Austin and I have set out to make two sets of space marine armor. A Space Wolf for myself and a Chaos space marine for him. I have a back ground in pepakura making halo stuff but i thought for this scale it might be simpler to use foam. Can someone direct me to a tutor on making templates for foam armor or something of the like?

Look for Sinisters thread. (Big and blue and takes up space and stuff thread)
He uses un-assembled pep pieces as templates for foam armor with great effect. The quality of your suit using this method will come down to critical thinking ability and painting skills. Both of those skills can not be taught for free by members of this forum and will require you to research (also using critical thinking skills).
If you know how to scale a Halo suit you probably read the 405th thread with the calculator for scaling armor based on height that is there. Use that same calculator to get whatever height you want then scale your pieces in pep to that size. Use those half assembled templates to make foam versions of them. Seal and sand. Prime and paint. Use a closed cell foam (EVA foam or camp mats) and any parts you cannot use foam and pep for will require use of critical thinking to accomplish.

Good luck.

I've actually got a question myself, for fibreglassers.

When I fibreglass my stuff, I pretty much bank on destroying a brush for every piece (two for the chest piece), at a bare minimum. By the time I'm done they're stones. I've tried turpentine and I've tried "mineral water" or whatever it is that smells like kerosene, to keep the brushes from getting as hard as a rock.

Kai needs a pro-tip. How do I preserve my brushes? Is there a way?

Honestly? No.

Supposedly if you get the brush in the Mineral Spirits while it's still "wet" it can be preserved, but I've never tried. I just buy my brushes in bulk from The Engineer Guy. It's much cheaper than buying from anywhere else. [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />

I also feel that worrying about saving your brushes takes away from the real thing you should be worrying about: The armor. I keep my stress low by simply tossing out the used brushes after I've used them.
