Finally got out and got the basic tools of the trade to start working on my guns:

ok was just wondering and wanting someones opinion. I bought a spray-paint that says it bonds to plastic and waht im wondering is if I should still go ahead and sand the guns before i paint them?  here is the quote from the web site:

Quote
"Fusion for Plastic Paint is the first paint of its kind that bonds directly to most plastics. This no-prep, superbond paint bonds easily to PVC pipes, plastic conduit, vinyl molding and siding."[/i]

Makes it sounds like I dont have to sand but was wondering what everyone thinks..

Sand, it will give you a more uniform finish.

Sand, but since plastic is so soft you'll have to use some very fine grit sandpaper to get a smooth finish as opposed to just scratching it - I'd guess somewhere in the microgrit range.  Start with 240 on the bare plastic and see if that smooths instead of scratching, and move up from there if you need to, then move up gradually to 1000 with each layer of paint you apply if you want a really smooth, polished finish.

When I painted my nerf guns, I just took them completely apart, primed them with citadel chaos black spray and then painted the pieces before putting it all back together again...
You just have to remember to take pictures of everything so you can put it back together again and still have it shoot...

That guy at least has the lower end models for sale. $40 isn't nearly as bad when it's factored in with the price of the original gun.

Jeff used the base of the rifle for a bolt pistol. We screwed in some extra plastic pieces on it to give it it's awesome shape AND covered the back thing!

But dude! I can not WAIT for DC 2011! I'm going full bitch inquisitor!!

*OK here is where I stand at on day 1 I have sanded off as much of the Nerf logo as I can. the 2 big Nerf logos on the side of the Recon Core I am going to cover them with a blank Styrene piece and had some quotes.*[/i]

you forgot to sand off the nerf logos and other "toy" script on the guns, (like the warning logos and copyright nerf things)
always best to prep the objects before priming them, otherwise once you've sanded them, you'll just have to respray areas anyway.
and wear a mask, you don't want to breathe in paint and plastic particles.
