Polyester Resin on cardboard
« on: March 07, 2022, 07:53:47 AM »
Hi!

I'm on the process of building a kasrkin armor. I already have finished the shoulders, arm and leg armor and the waist pieces, but for the breastplate and helmet I would like a more sturdy material. I have built the breastplate in thick cardboard (like the one in hard cover books) and modified it until everything fitted well to my body. The thing is, now I want to make it a bit sturdier. If I cover the inside and outside of it with polyester resin, will it soak inside and make it harder? I would like to stay away of fiberglass if possible. Any of you have tried something similar?

I've done it on a cardboard heater plenum for a vintage muscle car. Coat 1 side and let it harden, then the other and let it harden also. It might take 2 coats to do it, but it will make it hard. Post some pics of what you have, like to see it

Wow!!! Well, if it's good enough for a car I guess is enough for a cosplay  :D  Thanks for you reply, I really appreciate it. Let's see if I can upload those images. I already got the pauldrons done, along with the greaves, tassets and the knee and thigh pads. Those are in green because they are already finished with its inner padding and so. Is the horrible green from the foam itself. I just have to paint it all when I finish breasplate and helmet. The black parts are not glued yet, I have temporarily attached it so you can see how it looks.

Nice job. I'm not sure how the resin would react with the foam, so good thing you don't have it glued on yet. Keep up the great work

Thank you!! Apparently, polyester resin melts the foam, but for that parts I will use epoxy, which not reacts.
