Commissar
« on: May 21, 2017, 08:19:07 AM »
So, thats going to be my first costume.
I already have the coat. Im planing to make a simple chest armor from craft foam and I have already found a way to make
the hat on this very site.
As for the weapons and the rest, we'll see...

That coat is fantastic, where did you get it from or did you make it?

I bought it.
The site is called Musterbrand and they make all kinds of game-themed clothes.
Only downside is, their their stuff is expensiv a.f.

It's expensive but doesn't seem like a crazy price for a quality coat, the issue is for use only as a costume piece it is pricey.

Keep posting pictures, looking forward to see how everything turns out. I might do a DKoK Commissar later this year for Halloween if finishing my Dark Angel armor doesn't totally burn me out and I am interested to see how your costume comes together.

I cut out the shapes for the front and the back from posterboard.
On these I glued craft foam.
I first wanted to do a front and a back for the armour, but that didn't work,
because the heavy coat pressed against the backpiece and shifted the whole thing around.
So I'm just going to do the front.

Finished the basic Chestpiece. I keep it in place with two straps behind my back.
I cut the Aquila on the front out fo craft foam and then glued the pieces on(Wouldn't recomend it).
I bought the cap on eBay, the winged skulls were originaly on the collar of the coat.
Now I just have to finish the chestplate, make my sash and ad a bit of gold to the hat and the collar.

Looking good, what glue did you use to glue the eagle on? I have had a lot of success with contact cement. I usually trace an outline of what I am gluing on and then apply the cement to the back of the object and within the lines of the trace, wait 5 minutes and stick em together. No problems with separation at all and looks clean.

I used some kind of spray-on adhesive and applied it generously to the general area, where I wanted the pieces.
After that had dried, I used some all-purpose glue on the parts, that didn't stick together.

I first put a layer of wood glue on the Chestplate to make it more durable and to give it a smoother surface.
Turns out, you should keep the thing in the shape you want to have while the glue dries (which I didn't), otherwise it cracks (which it did).
Then i put a coat of primer on it and because I already liked the colour of it I just sprayed some silver from a distance
to give it this more mettalic look.
For the last thing neither my school english, nore google is any help. Basically Its a clear spray paint that protects the underlying layers from rubbing of or getting wet.

I've also put some more stuff on the hat and the collar.

Looking good! I tried the spray glue also and I ended up regluing after it began to peel up. That's when I switched to the contact cement.

The clear spray paint is normally referred to as a clear varnish or an enamel coat.

Have you thought of any weapons to go along with it?

For Weapons I have a Larp cutlass and a Nerf gun I painted dull black.
Maybe I'll do something more elaborate in the future, but sadly I don't have the time right now.
