Swooping Hawks-Phoenix Lord Baharroth
« on: January 16, 2017, 04:24:14 PM »
Good evening ! (First of all, I'm sorry for my terrible English)

Two days ago I started working on my Baharroth cosplay, and I thought it could interest people willing to build a Swooping Hawk or an Autarch, so here is my progress !

I started with the wings, since they would determine the shape of the shoulder plates and breastplate. I found a reference for the different wings available for the minis, including the ones I needed.

I cropped the picture, and imported the wings in GIMP. The quality was really bad, so I kept the reference picture as a layer and traced the shape on another layer. I then printed my pattern to scale one on several A4 sheets (I determined the size of the wings from my own height with a rule of three). I obtained this ridiculously huge piece of paper.

The "feathers" looked like crap at this point, but I didn't really care since I just needed the rough shape to begin with. I re-cut them a bit afterwards, and they now look like this.

I then created a frame for the wings.  I used multilayer pipe: it's cheaper than aluminium, and unlike PVC you don't need a heatgun to shape it. I used this material for my two previous pairs of wings and it worked, so...

I then gave my pipes the right shape using my pattern (twice, since they are two wings), and screwed them both to a piece of MDF. I haven't made the harness yet, so it's attached with crappy straps on the picture below.

I might have to re-cut the MDF piece, it's a bit too large for my back. This will be the base for all the "feathers", which will be made out of EVA foam. I already cut a few of them. Each one will be sanded and carved (with a woodburning tool) before I can put them on the main frame. I need 114 wings. This might take forever.
Here are a few "feathers", just cut from foam.

That's all for the moment, but they'll be more...soon.

Thank you Ezekye ! (I can't believe I just said that)

I finished the base for the wings. All the "feathers" are going to be ttached to the black part.

I also cut all the feathers. I ony put one layer of them on the picture below (they are not attached, as I have to sand them before I glue anything). Those are the "main" feathers. Then I'll add smaller ones on each side.

(The can of Coke is just for scale)

I have to sand all 114 feathers, and I'm not going to do this in one day... I might sand a few of them each day, and work on the armor at the same time now that I know how much space is taken by the wings.

The wings look really great! It's nice to see that there are still people that build Eldar costumes.

Good luck!

I'm baaack !

I sanded 60 of the "feathers" for the wings and started working on the armor.

I started with the chestplate (nothing is glued for the moment, hence the tape). The can of paint is here for scale (yes I'm small). This piece isn't suited for a female since I'm finally not doing a genderbend but rather using my almost inexistant breasts to do a crossplay...

I then built the shoulders and began working on the hawk thing. The details were made with a woodburning tool.

I might start assembling the wings in a few days.

PS: I don't even know which colors I'm gonna choose...

I modified the chesplate a little bit. Now it looks like this.

And...ALL THE FEATHERS ARE SANDED.

A few of them...

All of them...(Sorry for my face, I was trying not to laugh)

Saw the pictures of the wings on the FB group! Didn't realize you were already working on the chest piece too! Awesome work!

It was annoying, but I'm glad I finally decided to do it.

This isn't much of an update, but here is what the wings look like now. In fact, I worked a lot on things that aren't visible, but were still essential.

I also drew the Hawk's Talon (I know, I suck)...

...and started working on it.

The pipe is just here for support, it's not the actual barrel...I only worked on the butt for the moment.

And here's a (really) rough cut of the sword.
