I was feeling burnt out working on bigger and more complex projects, so I decided to do something smaller. My bike helmet is just flat black, and has always been a little bit boring.
So I got myself inducted into the inquisition, and now have my badge of status on my helmet. It was a quick little weekend project, and I think it turned out pretty well.
Started by masking off the area, and sketching the design.
Then I gave the area a light sanding to help give the paint a better surface to stick to.
Then it was a series of masking areas off, and painting the main colours. I did a few layers for each colour, going slightly darker each time to try give it some texture.
Painting the skull was definitely the hardest part. Most of my freehand painting in the past has been with an airbrush. So using actual brushes was a bit of a challenge. But just remember that it is all about layers, and colours. You aren't going to get the final product on your first pass. You need to keep adding colours and details, and it will work out.
Then finally I added the gold trim using a sharpie, and voila. Now I am off to hunt down some heretics.
