Adepta Dialogus WIP (Image heavy)
« on: June 09, 2015, 06:53:32 PM »
This will be updated irregularly for more consistant updated please refer to my Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/AureliusArmoury

Based from this image, from the Blood of Matyrs codex for Dark Heresy.

Started with cutting out a test pattern for the dress from poly pop, I added extra to the seam allowance because I felt I got the wrong size pattern, turns out it wasn't necessary.
But I'm getting a new pattern which has the sleeve already modified.

Started making the bionics out of a premade plastic mask, timmed and then covered in worbla so other details could be added easily.

Belt is simple, straight flat pice of foam with velcro on the inside and outside with the "I" over the top, skull is a halloween prop cut in half and sunk into the foam then glued in place.

Collar has been the most complex so far, aside from the bionics. Due to the pixelation of the reference I'm making up details that I THINK belong in the image so while not 100% accurate I'm making do.

Still to come:
Laud Hailer staff
Electronics
Powerpack
Robe
Tabard
Scroll
Extra kit, bags, belt attachments.

Robe update:

Ended up buying a different pattern in the end to use as my robe, just for the sake of the flared sleeves. I didn't want to have to pattern them myself as I'm not great at sewing to begin with.
Made the base (inside layer) with red poly pop up to the elbow and then changed to an embroidered fabric for the inside of the sleeves.
Top (outside) layer is Stretch velvet knit.  I was worried it would be super hard to sew but turns out when you sew it together with the 2 right sides facing the texture of the fabric grips and it's pretty easy.
I had some trouble putting the two layers together and I admit I cheated at the neckline by use bias binding but it's hidden under the tabard and the collar anyway.

Fabric.com is amazing for not only their prices but range, especially when you live in a country where everything is hella expencive.

Test wear of the robe.

Bionics update:

Materials:
Premade half mask, worbla, craft foam, wire, hole punch, hot glue, cheap reflective sunglasses and paint.

Always dry fit this sort of stuff cause I had to fiddle with the design a couple times so i didn't have a giant blind spot in the middle of my field of vision.

Added the little details

Butchered some reflective lens sunglasses to become the lenses for my bionics, I recommend a rough cut then sand back to the right shape. Took me a couple goes to get them right.

Adding the lenses. Now big tip here: make sure you've done everything you need to with heat before you put in the lenses and also place them correctly the first time. I didn't now there's a small part of the lens in the right eye that's blurry because the heat bubbled the reflective film.

Added in all the little wires by poking holes into the worbla then hot gluing the end of the wire before sticking it in. Covered the lenses with maskign tape before painting to save havign to wash off the paint and risk scratches.

Collar and backpack update:

Materials used: EVA foam, Craft foam, mesh from a sieve, stick on foam dots used for protecting furniture?, tiny bit of worbla, contact cement, hot glue, velcro, strapping,

It's all about how you layer it.

First half of the backback, built the base first then added the details, cut into the grill to sink it down a little and everything else is just built up.

I added another layer behind so I could use the same method as my SoB powerpack and have it slot onto a smaller square that clipped onto the back. It's then held onto my back with the help of a backpack and a loop that slides over my belt. Nice and lightweight so no need for any extra rigging.

Laud hailer

Materials used: PVA pipe, a salad bowl, frypan splatter screen, embroidery hoop, EVA foam, craft foam, foam pipe for electrical stuff, speaker, extension cables, worbla, metal buttons.

The salad bowl got a good sanding to help with paint and glue adhesion and was mounted on a base which took a while to get right so it sat flush or as close to as possible. I made the pattern from card before using foam.

I reversed the mount so the curve would go the other way and made a seat for the portable personal speaker/amplifier to sit in. Dabs of hot glue were added for extra snuggness and grip.
The foam pipe is attached to the side and there are holes on the inside so I can feed the extension cables through it.

How the cables run through the staff and it's height compared to mine. (I'm about 5'4"ish.... I think, it's bee a while.

Control box in the middle to hide my MP3 and also the join in the staff. the studs are the metal make your own buttons top halves. There's 2 different bronze/copper paints used then gold over the top then a black wash.

SCROLL

Material used: Calico, fabric markers, fabric stiffener and my sanity.

As seen in the robe update the tabard is a strip of calico folded in half to give it a bit of thickness, then marked so it's no to wide in some places before being sewn and then cut. The edges were singed with a lighter then coated in pva glue to stop any fraying. I then set about taking it everywhere with me so I could write on it with fabric markers. Everywhere ended up just being before work and on my break at work. The front is text from friends who I asked to give me pieces of their favourite peom, song, book, joke, quote or any other text they liked. The back is the history of the Sister of battle from the age of apostesy and the reign of blood to the rise of Sebastian Thor as written in the Witch Hunters codex. There's also quotes and text segments pulled from other 40k lore.
The scroll (not pictured) has the opening page of the Horus Heresy written on it, 2 versions, one from the first novel and one from the later one where Horus has turned.

All illuminations (the big letters), and drawings were hand drawn on with pencil before going over with fabric marker.

The ends were then coated in fabric stiffener to help them curl at the ends, it didn't quite work how I wanted so I had to spot sew the rolls into place, which not quite gives it the look I wanted but I can't exactly make fabric defy gravity.

Absolutely amazing build so far!!

That is excellent.  I can't wait to see the final results.

What brand of EVA glue to you use?  Is it a local AU brand or an import?  Or do you use a bit of superglue and then hot glue?  (mainly for the EVA foam joins).

Regards
Douglas.

Sorry for the delayed response.
I don't use a specific brand, I pick up what I can at local hardware stores that are the thickness (10mm) I need them to be. But recently I've had to start ordering online due to the stores only carrying the thinner (6mm) foam sheets.
I currently use Sika Contact Cement to glue everything together. It's much cleaner than hot glue and less brittle than super glue. Highly recommend it.

Cheers,

I think ALDI is having a 6 tile 60cm x 60cm x 1.2cm pack for $11 next saturday that i'm thinking of picking some up.  Sika Contact cement.  Cheers.  Do you reckon that would work for putting together a SM foam build helmet?

D.

Yes it will definitely work, I've made 2 using the contact cement and had much better results than the one I made with hot glue.

been working with Weldwood as a contact cement on most my EVA stuff. Hot glue has a habit of letting go if it gets warm again.
