Project "tarantula" sentry gun
« on: August 13, 2014, 02:42:34 PM »
I kickstarted a new project last week, Im not so in costume making currently, like to create more heavier stuff.
I choose one of the three ideas I had in mind now.
Everbody who plays IG knows the sentry guns, nicknamed by the trooper "tarantula",
In reason we had enough bolter and autocannon firepower in the squad, I prefer the lascannon version with anti-tank capability.

At all my greater buildings I change details , here I ad a possibility of use. The gun should be usable as a trooper handled gun too(Switch off the automatic targeting system and use it by hand).  I ad later an air defense targeting optic, which I luckily found in the net. Size would not the measurments from the imperial armour book, it becomes smaller at all.

Thats the basic idea (copyright from this pic by forgeworld)

Starter kit material , stripped ringmount, FK20mm air defense optic, 4 steel sheets 1,5mm thickness and a winch, used for the up and down movement of the cannons.

Base bottom and upper sheet, cutted with ankle grinder

Here is a little progress, not so much as I want, in reason of the bad weather with some rain between.
Welding the carrier ring for the ringmount , finished it with cleaning by grinder

Started with selfmade tubes, in reason that Ive no fitting size for the pins, used later to connect the extension brackets to the base. Its a very time intense work.

First ready extension bracket fixing point

And then,I startet with the construction of the first extension bracket. There are no templates or plans, I have to work with some ideas i my head how-to-do.

Its the base plate of the first segment, I use a second segment, but it will fixed by welding , non-movable.

Thanks...the next two weeks Im out of this project in reason of preparing for the 5 days fieldcamp we do every year at the army training range.
But I have done a little progress with the second segment of the extension bracket.

Thanks ;-) After leaving the field camp behind, Im back to the project.

The first emplacement bracket is nearly ready

This weeks work is cutting some of the single pieces for later welding together as a emplacement bracket.

And I get a real radar piece in an surplus store, I think it will be looking nice at the tarantuala
