Yet another Commissar
« on: June 09, 2010, 12:40:00 PM »
Hi guys.  Finally got some pictures of my Commissar after our Larp event.

Ive actually had the coat done for several months but just never got around to getting any pics of me wearing it.

I made it from a really nice melton wool so its Very warm and heavy.  Feels great though.  The style is based on an american civil war generals great coat.  Most great coats of the period were similar anyway with styles not changing much over a couple of hundred years.

It took me awhile to figure out the pattern using a really cheap material to make a toile from until I was ready to make the final coat out of wool.

Also doing the button holes and sewing on 24 buttons is a real pain lol.

The hat is a proper russian officer hat bought in russia with an extra band made from matching red wool with a etched aquila.

Future upgrades Im planning are :-

replacement epaulettes as these were reused from my steampunk outfit, I need ones with more skulls

Looks great! [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' />

Really great work on the coat! I have to say, you look a bit like Civil War  Gen. Grant.

You have a very solid base, the collar tabs are a very nice touch.
I think if you add a few medals, skulls and eagles, you have a great commissar uniform.

I've gotta ask, is that a boffer cutlass from the Action Props section of Knighthawk Armoury?

Seconding the 40K LARPs in California. Seriously, we need some. I'd drive down to SoCal to do that.

On topic, that's an awesome coat! Beautiful design and construction. The only minor criticism I have to make is that the hem would look better if it were blind or hand hemmed so you can't see that line of stitching around the bottom.

Thanks everyone [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

The sword is a fibreglass core/foam body with a latex skin commonly used larp weapon in europe.  That paticular one is quite a few years old now and came from http://www.lrpstore.com/
Looks like their current cutlas is slightly different though.

Thanks for the comment Seraphim, it wasnt until I got the pics that I noticed the hemming myself, its not quite as bad in person but I did spot that in the pics too and I think I might just redo it by hand.  I really should know better but everything is sooo much easier with a sewing machine and its a pretty long hem [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />

Oh well, it will give me something else to do while watching the telly [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />
