3D game objects help needed!
« on: February 16, 2013, 05:34:00 PM »
Hi all,
In a nutshell I love unfolding 3d models for pepakura but will be quite honest have no idea when it comes to programming and pc stuff in general. I have seen the santos program and although i'm sure it's written very well i just can't get my head round how to get the meshes (i assume that means the actual 3D object) from the game so i can start unfolding them. I really like trying to make the unfolds as user friendly as possible so time spent isn't an issue. I have played with the objects already available using metasequoia (which took ages to figure out!) but am surprised how little there are considering how many objects there must be in the game from armour to weapons to helmets etc, etc. I've not seen anywhere thats already removed the objects so another dead end. Any help will be much appreciated!

Many Thanks! Paul.

What program is that you're referring to? I know my way around XSI, but most game engines have proprietary formats so in many cases it's difficult if not impossible to pull files from them that are usable.

Cheers Mike! There's a thing called santos tool I think that's designed for the job but I get abit lost whilst following it. There's lots of people's mods for the games and the pepakura files used on this site and others are from the game models so I assume its do-able. Thanks again for the reply!

Do you have a link for the program or anything?

Ah so it's only good for the original DoW then?

As far as I can tell, each of the three 40K Franchise games (DoW, DoW II, and Space Marine) have their unique scheme for storing the assests so a program for one doesn't work on the others.

To both above; I'm not too sure. There seems to be plenty of modding going on for these games but as far as models (or meshes) for peping or unfolding its limited to what people are interested in. I'd like to have a go at as much of the stuff as possible. [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /> ambitious I know but I'm a tinkerer! You also need to consider that overall, models ripped straight oh of a game tend to make for very poor costumes without doing a bunch of modeling yourself to tweak things, I recently grabbed some IG files off the pepakura site, and if I had just built hem as-is I would even be able to assemble some of the parts due to intersecting geometry and some parts like he chest would be difficult if not impossible to wear.

Also the DoW games use rather low poly models when compared to something like he recent Space Marine game, and would need a lot of extra work and bonding to smooth it out.

Your willing news to do what a lot of people seem to hate(I don't mind really but people say I'm weird) is admirable, but I just don't think it's practical for the people using the files to create costumes from what I can tell.

I can get some side-by-side comparison pics tonight once I get home.

I agree as most if not all of the pep and obj files I've downloaded over the years I have 'played' with for my own dimensions or I didn't feel the proportions were right. I can put a couple of screen grabs up myself to show what I mean. I've started on my own beaky from scratch based on the original plastic model set. I want the peps as a base for costumes. I usually take a lot of detail out of a pep file as its fiddle, time consuming and can look better added afterwards! Honestly it sounds like you're only s small step or 2 away from just creating the 3D files from scratch anyways. That's prolly what I'll be doing for my next project not that I have a better grasp of the process.

Here are a couple of grabs of what i've done so far. Like i said i have little to no modelling knowledge and if you had any idea how long it took me in evenings to get this far you'd be pissing yourself! Modding files i have no problem with as theres something there for me to push pull remove add...

Derp forgot about this thread! xD

Certainly a good start! It's all about practice, once you start making the peps of things you're modeling you'll get a better feel for edge loops and the like, for example youll need to do some new edges and such of the tip of the nose to round it out a bit more, but a good start none the less!
