a little bit of help please
« on: June 08, 2012, 01:52:00 AM »
so, my 10 year old son has decided that he wants to be a chaos space marine for Halloween because its the army he wants to build. I have been going through alot of the posts and though the costumes were fantastic, they are a bit time consuming. as a mom of 4, two of which are still in diaper, I was hoping you guys may have some ideas for how to accomplish this semi-monumental task.
we are all going to dress as 40k, I believe the hubby is doing DKoK, my oldest wants nids, still deciding for the youngest two, and I am doing eldar(still deciding on that one as to make a costume for my army of choice, necrons, I think would prove to be another headache I don't need lol)
thanks in advance

sorry not chaos, that would go in another category, I will have to ask him again I really don't know much about space marine chapters so i will post later sorry its 419 am so brain isn't fully functioning.

I think the thread can stay here, you've got a wide range of costumes to research and build in very little time to do so...

A quick and easy (enough) way to make armor I've seen is doing the foam method. Correct me if I'm wrong guys but it normally goes over a pep file right?

Well... You could skip the pepakura build first and jump straight into cutting and making cylinders from foam that affix together to make the armor sections. They'd be light, easy to work with and if you got two colors, you could have the main armor color + a different trim color. Because lets's face it. Space marine armor is essentially a series of carefully made hollow truncated cones but who's to say for a quicker version you couldn't do cylinders. I doubt anyone will stop to criticize your son in his costume on halloween, if they do, please see the note below on weaponry.

No matter which chapter your son wishes to portray the devil in this quick and easy costume will be the details, e.g. weapons, makeup, and armor accoutrements.

A power weapon could be a repainted version of a Nerf Foam Weapons. Plus, since they're made to beat the snot out of people safely, your son can swing away safe in the fact that it'll be no worse than beating someone through a phone book.

Makeup should be fairly straightforward, chaos icons, fake scars, etc.

Armor details can be found at a lot of halloween stores, plastic chains, fake blood, skulls, spikes, etc. Not to mention the biggest saving grace that any "oh @*%& I need a costume fast and I only have it half done" thought can easily contain... Long tattered robes. Lots of chapters wear robes over their armor so if you don't finish everything completely, you can figure a robe into the process and cut down on the pieces you have to fully flesh out before the big day.

Hope this helps, I promise, I'm really not insane.

thank you for some great ideas. I saw the pep files but have no way to view them as both of our laptops died within days of each other.

I blame a buddy of ours start talking chaos and it spreads like a virus everyone starts building them and my son caught it too lol originally he was going to do blood angels. my 11 year just loves nids, which is what I would have gone with but for learning I went with the necrons and I am so happy I stuck with them such awesome stuff coming out for them now!
I think I am going to work with cardboard since I have a healthy supply considering we are still unpacking our household. also I am pretty good at making it do what I want it to do I will post pics as I actually p

Wow - the whole family is playing 40K ... that's just amazing, you're never short of opponents  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

As for the chaos space marine costume - since it's for Halloween and it's most likely "just for fun" ... there's plenty of things you've seen here you can skip over.  Most of us will shoot for an "accurate" costume (which will look as much as the mini or artwork as possible).

I think Voodoo gave you the best advise possible - simplify the costume as much as possible. Beside the helmet, the shoulder and the backpack... the whole thing is pretty much truncated cones or cylinders.  If you've done that before - then I say go with truncated cones .. if not, stick to cylinders (they will be easier to put together as Voodoo already pointed out).

The only things left are the helmet, the shoulders and the backpack.
For the helmet - you could decide to forego the helmet altogether and use make up. It will reduce your build time and you'll be able to play with a couple of things to give the costume that "chaos vibe".

For the shoulders, they are hard to build from cardboard (or pretty much any material that can't be molded or formed). What I suggest here is to find something that could be modified to fit the bill.  Like a big kid construction helmet you'd find at the dollar store. Wouldn't cost much, only a bit of cutting is required and you've got yourself some chaos space marine shoulder.  The other thing that comes to mind is knee pads - I don't know how big is your kid, but if he's on the small side, foam kneepad (you can pick up at your local hardware store) might be something that will look good enough... if not, they might be something you can work off of (building up bulk with cardboard).

The last thing would be the backpack.
Here there's no easy way out - I suggest winging it and playing with the design to facilitate the build process.

Last Last thing - the "chaos vibe" is all about details.
Chaos star, spikes, skulls, streched skin, gore, runes, etc.
So, make sure you keep yourself a bit of time to do all that little stuff... if your 10 year old is a bit artsy, then it would be a great part of the project he can help you with  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

Good Luck with that whole thing... man I can't wait for my kid to be old enough for this kind of things - I'm going to dress him up big time at every halloween  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

yeah its great.
I don't want to overly simplify it I just wouldn't be happy with that, but I will try to keep it simple.
I am making a commissar costume for my 1 year old son and probably sisters of battle or a harlequin for my daughter who is 2. my 11 year old has decided on tau and my 10 year old is now saying grey knight I guess we will see once the armor is made.now just have to decide on my costume...

You know that now that you've said all that - you're going to have to post pictures of all the costumes   [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

I just gotta see the 1 year old Commissar !!!   [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' />

Mine is a couple of months old only - and will not be 1 yr old for his first Halloween... still looking for something cool to do that will go with at least one of daddy's costume  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

Awesome advice Voodoo. That idea of the tattered robes sounds like a really good one. That way, you would could paint on an Imperialis and then deface it peaking out from the tattered robes that have spikes on the shoulders sticking through holding it in place.

If you are having trouble making the other items and need a fast and nasty way of doing it that will last one night, make the legs and abs out of cardboard and seal it with spray on rubber from the hardware store... It would look nasty but hey => chaos!!!

Ha, quite agreeable, EVA foam, aka the floor mat foam with the jigsaw edges would be a good option.  PVA [wood glue] coating on the outside before painting, pretty doable in the time allocated, be sure to include lots of spiky bits for chaaaaaoooos!  Craft foam [also eva] comes in thinner sections good for details

You can draw out some pattern of the armor and get some camping mats, hot glue gun and Glue sticks, cutting tools and a few things from any dollar store ( foam knee pads, light up toys, etc.)  and you all set to go and this should take 3-4 hours / day for a couple weeks.

I love scratch builds here is one I did for my son two years ago.  It's not 40k but it shows what you can do the night before halloween with some duct tape, card board and some imagination.

I really can't wait to see what 40k stuff you come up with for your little ones too.  Eliajah wants to be a space marine this year!!! Squee!  Daddy is so proud! Crap I don't have a lot of time!

nice. I've done plenty of last minute costumes from cardboard, I have 3 younger sisters and now 4 kids so i know all about last minute lol.  I just don't want these ones to be last minute!
