Title: Warhammer music
Post by: Scud on July 22, 2011, 12:06:00 AM
So... what music would be fitting for warhammer 40k?

It's not just about good music, it's about how this music would fit into the setting and
what race/faction might enjoy it.
I'll start.

Hatesex - The vapor chariot
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn9PzWmBYWE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn9PzWmBYWE)
It sounds like a demonette singin` while noise marines play the instruments.
Just insane. Genre is called Deathrock.
(There is a nice Dita von Teese tribute video with this song on youtube, but I won't link
to it, it's a bit naughty)  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />

Bolt Thrower - Through the Eye of Terror

http://youtu.be/IwCXaFbiwRk (http://youtu.be/IwCXaFbiwRk)

Chaos marching music

A lot of Bolt Thrower music is actually based on 40K so mainly anything they do.
A small sampling of song titles
Dark Millenium
Plague Bearer
World Eater
Realm of Chaos

If you think about it, alot of material from Sabaton can loan itself to Warhammer 40K due to the nature of the events being sung about. Don't believe me? Well, someone converted the lyrics of Stalingrad to match the Third Armageddon campaign here (http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Grimdark_Songwriting#Sabaton:_Stalingrad).

On a somewhat related note, look further on that page and see the awsome grimdark conversions of other popular songs. I wouldn't mind hearing those being sung IRL.

In Eisenhorn something is described, that could be the 40k version of Techno.
I wonder what that would sound like.

Triarii - Overkill

Sounds very dark and martial. Maybe for the Imperial Guard
or Inquisition.
AFAIK all of Triarii's tracks are quite dark and bombastic.
Could be good music for pen and paper rpgs.

I dug out our GM's playlist, and it has the following:

Elend - coolest ambient music EVER, flowing, ethereal, grandiose, dark - this is how I would imagine wandering into the decadent world of the high houses, where you have to balance on the edge of the razorblade to survive

Triarii - the martial type, perfect for marching and dying (with lips pressed together of course) - ideal for combat scenes, and lemmings, I mean Imperial Guard [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='rolleyes.gif' />

Nordvargr - noizy and deeply unsettling, some of their stuff, like those with Merzbow, have more of a "technical" feel to them (more noise) - the perfect music for places that have an evil foreboding to them, with lots of machines

There is always the Dawn of War soundtrack.  I quite like the Imperial Creed song.  Very majestic.

But that's a bit obvious for this thread.

When I think of 40k music - my mind goes to electronic music - and in particular Industrial and EBM (a sub genre of Industrial - it stands for Electronic Body Music).  This music suffers from an overabundance of war/militia audio foley, film clips, and lyrics.  I guess 'suffers' is the wrong word for 40k.  We might as well say it 'benefits.'  Anyway - while the war themes hit ad nausia in this genre - I still love the genre itself.

If you want to go dark and foreboding - try some EBM 'militia' themed music.

VNV Nation has several songs that remind me of 40k (Imperial Guard mostly).

Honour
Afterfire
Requiem QCN (This one is in Latin)
Fearless
Kingdom
Legion
Sentinal
Serial Killer

These are the ones that are most reminiscent of 40k to me.  Pretty much any of their songs work.  I've also used some of their lyrics on purity seals... (Especially Requiem QCN - that one is actually an old hymn from the 1600's).

Haujobb has a few songs that could work.  "Solutions for a Small Planet" is probably the best album for this mix.  Their Album Vertical Theory is also great and has a song called "Faith in Chaos."

Beborn Beton sings about 'alien' encounters a lot.  Their album Truth is pretty much flooded with songs talking about that theme.

Covenant's Modern Ruin album sets a good 40k mood with a nice variety of beats and melidies.  Their album Northern Lights includes "Northern Lights" and "Call the Ships to Port" which I would throw in a 40k mix.

Then of course there's Skinny Puppy.  (Love in Vein, Killing Game, and Inquisition off Last Rights Album).  Greater Wrong of the Right has an appropriate theme for the 40k world as well, and it's less 'harsh' than Last Rights.

Apoptygma Berzerk's early album Apocalyptic Manifesto has a few songs:

Electronic Warfare & Burnin' Heretic are the two most applicable.
Their album Welcome to Earth is a little less Industrial.  It has songs that are appropriate such as "Star Sign" Eclipse, and Paranoia,

Front Line Assembly's Millennium album, including songs like:
Search and Destroy
This Faith
Plasma Springs

Final Impact on the Tactical Neural Implant album... (actually much of that album as well...)

What else - Funker Vogt's album Maschine Zeit has songs like... Maschine Zeit - Nuclear Winter, Sins, Gunman, Cold War, Black Market Dealers... Zeit...

I could be here all night.  Check out the following groups as well:  Nitzer Ebb, Komor Kommando, Assemblage 23, Terrorfakt... The list goes on in the EBM genre for 40k really...

If you're looking for something progressive and interesting, but less EBMish/Industrial go for Unkle's 'War Stories' album. Psyence Fiction is also a great album with a few war/battle themed songs.

Crystal Castle's Air Wars reminds me of 40k as well if you don't want 'dark.'

And OF COURSE there is the song my friend got in my head today.  Falco/After the Fire's "Der Kommissar"

"Don't turn around... Der Kommissar's in town!" LOL.

I have so much more but I'm going to stop here.  I hope this helps...

I should make this a Facebook meme...

I hope this helps...

thx, Lamia.

With the electronic music: A lot of it is a bit too "techno" and soft.
But it could fit into a club for rich nobility where they listen to "dangerous lower hive"
music and fell a certain thrill.

For the Thousand Sons i always liked Therion.

They mostly sing about occult and mystic stuff.

But something with less "rock" would be good. Occult and mystic themes and
instruments that are as strange and weird as possible.

While the game's art direction, setting and vocal tracks are utterly alien to Warhammer 40000, Blazblue has some magnificent rock and orchestral songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppxQGsk1Y5w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppxQGsk1Y5w) Memory of Tears, which might suit the Sisters of Battle or some such.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jevL08ECdvo&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jevL08ECdvo&feature=related) Gluttony Fang, which would probably fit Chaos Space Marines rather well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NO0kjuQPUg&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NO0kjuQPUg&feature=related) and Condemnation Wings which might be good for the Inquisition (though perhaps a little too fast paced)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fnRmD23eJA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fnRmD23eJA) The track Frontline, which oddly enough strikes me as a Guard theme, especially later when more Orchestral elements are introduced.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F_a9t0JsKo&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F_a9t0JsKo&feature=related) And the aptly named Awakening the Chaos, which sounds less like a Chaos theme and something more Imperial.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbB0UuldYLQ&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbB0UuldYLQ&feature=related) the track Under Heaven's Destruction, which seems like a good track for battle.

Of course, you're mileage might vary (and if you don't want to read nonsense about the Characters and Story, ignore the comment sections. on the vids.)

I was going to mention VNV Nation, Front Line Assembly and some of the others, but then I noticed that Commissar Stein had got there first.  Commissar Stein, I salute you for your excellent taste.

Feindflug are also potentially the right sort of thing - very dark, heavy, militaristic electro-industrial, a lot of it about the horrors of mechanised warfare.

Tyske Ludder are in a vaguely similar vein, and worth looking at.

There's also Heimataerde, who mix electro-industrial/EBM with medieval instruments and a morbid fascination with the Crusades.

Well. If we're talking Space Marines, they are after all Warrior Monks for all intents and purposes, albeit ones wearing power armour. So I think this little ditty sums up the ever present background atmosphere inside the great halls and corridors of those vast cathedral battleships.

Warhammer Music Vol 1 (http://spotify:user:chwbcc:playlist:5YheXmPpCIoeCWveCFDRaF)

Ok so I compiled my favorites from the list provided in this thread.

There were a lot of good songs, some are not available on Spotify yet (probably a regional thing) and other I couldn't find at all.

I also tried to make it flow in some sort of order that builds to an epic conclusion. So that is also why some of the songs didn't make it in the final cut. Let me know what you all think.

And after a while maybe someone else can compile Vol 2 with the songs I missed.

Enjoy,
chwbcc

Was Two Steps from Hell (http://www.twostepsfromhell.com/) already mentionet? They make great, epic music. One of my favs (and very 40k'ish) is this one: Titan Dune (http://cUZYJTfgUBhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUZYJTfgUBA)).

Another band that is very ... impressive, is the band Van Canto (http://www.vancanto.de/). They're doing A-Capella Metal. Yeah, that's right. I've seen them live and they're awesome. One of their 40k'ish songs is e.g. their cover of "Fear of the Dark" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyHcIHssdHA).

The russian band, HMKids, makes songs based on the Warhammer 40k universe. Sadly, they're mostly in russian... [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' />

They did, however make songs like Adeptus Mechanicus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ecvLRxb3MU), Necron (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdKwti1NxFQ) and 'Ere we go! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0uBU5ddX4U)

I wasn't sure if I should leave this question here or the D*con tread, but it is a music question, so I decided here.

My costume is going to have a built in sound system (in the grav chute) so I would like to know, what music do we want for the parade? What kind of imperium marching songs or anything should we have?

Also, for any reconcile unit ever, this song gives me a feeling of sneaking and spying, and not just because it is called scouting, c&c had some of the best soundtracks

Replace Destructos with Necrons:

Morbid Angel - Destructos vs the Earth
Quote
Our patience gone for your folly
There'll be no restraint
Though it's been urged there's no warrant
To let you remain
Ten thousand years
For a test you failed miserably
The target's locked
And this planet will soon be human free

March, March

... No hero should rise amongst you
... Don't prolong your misery accept your fate

Laser vision has monitored for centuries
We've gathered evidence
We know that you are disease

It matters not...
What counter measures you employ
You're not the first ones that we've destroyed
We take charge the task at hand
Rid the third planet of life...

Destroy man
We're marching
Destructos marching on man
We're marching
Destructos marching on!

We're marching
Destructos marching on!

Convoke the data
Attack imminent
Final closure on this failed earth experiment

It matters not...
What counter measures you employ
You're not the first ones that we've destroyed
We take charge the task at hand
Rid the third planet of life...

Destroy man
We're marching
Destructos marching on man
We're marching
Destructos marching on man
We're marching
Destructos marching on man
We're marching
Destructos marching on!

Destroy man
We're marching
Destructos marching on!
We destructos march

No mercy from annihilation
No mercy from destructo-nation
Seek Total annihilation
No mercy from destructo-nation

We're marching on
Through the sordid human remains
The dead attest... Your resistance in vain
Ten thousand years and you never evolve?
It's over soon for humans one and all
The facts have shown all resources you waste
Our eyes have seen all your greed and distaste
You feeble beings, just a blight to this earth
Destructos marching on...

and because i like electronic music I'll post the remix version.

HMKids - Imperial Fists.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHiodF7eNrA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHiodF7eNrA)

a sorta translation:
Vortex of battle and war cries
Carry its banner Dorn sons
Again bright steel blade their sparkle
And righteous soul ablaze with light ,

Fist emblem, banner stands
Again, the enemy retreats in disarray

Glory through time , Hail Primarch
You are alive forever in our hearts ,
Their victory is dedicated to you !
Your glory and in His glory in the world !

Fist - you were born to destroy,
Heretics ruthlessly crush .

Enemy tremble - your death comes,
Imperial Fist again goes into battle !

Glory through time , Hail Primarch
You are alive forever in our hearts ,
Their victory is dedicated to you !
Your glory and for His glory in the world !

Imperial Fist - the defender of people !
Brothers ready! In battle , quick!

Dorn , the Emperor - they look after us !
So let soar imperial banner !

Glory through time , Hail Primarch
You are alive forever in our hearts ,
Their victory is dedicated to you !
Your glory and for His glory in the world !
