Title: Runed Frost Axe - Commission
Post by: Djinn on November 02, 2010, 03:00:00 AM
So it begins again. With my costume completed and life sort of settling down again, I figured it was maybe time to get started on a new project!
I'm taking on my first major commission, and here it is!

A member of the Wolf Guard. With the large amount I learned on my BT, this should be a fun (albeit extremely time consuming) project. Now that I have a proper camera.. should be some good WiP shots going on.

The first thing I am making is his weapon. A rune etched Frost Axe. Now with more badassery then usual. I am giving pepping the base of it a shot (I may use the pepped version to build it out of something else, but I'm trying this first)

This is what the initial base is going to look like.

After some.. well.. guessing.. on the size, I think I got it "large enough" for a base. I will likely extend some bits of it and make it bigger, but with the power supply and whatnot I think it will be.. well.. a big ass axe.
Some pictures of the blade base.

Moving right along.
I made a rough cut of the axes power supply using plasticard. Needs a bit of fixing up, but there will be plenty of time for that.
Going to do some fun electronics work in this bad boy, You'll see what I'm up to in a day or two.

HA! I had those same plates in college!

I like what you're doing so far, has a nice weight and size to it.

Might I offer this up as a possible material for the building of the blade?
Illusion Film (http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=448&) I think it might be perfect for what you have going on. Give the blade a nice power field look..
I used it in my unfinished power sowrd...

Thats probably a little over the top for me (.. interesting..) but I'll definitely find a use for that stuff somewhere. Crazy colors.

The blue and other "colors" are from the paint I put on the blade. The Illusion film itself is just clear and kinda opalescent and isn't quite as shimmery IRL [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

Norse runes say "Endure"
Have to make another one for the opposite side (damn if those runes weren't difficult as hell to carve out of that plastic)

Hahah, I like to keep busy. At least when I am interesting in something.
It's more fun for me then it rightfully should be, lots of tedious cutting.. but don't worry - I haven't even looked at any pep files for the actual armor yet. The weapon is probably not the easiest part, but it certainly is the most fun and the most satisfying to have laying around. (Nothing motivates like a completed power weapon eh?)
It won't take till May, but I haven't even rightfully started yet.

I almost hope our brother from Fenris doesn't want me to mail it to him early XD I want to play with it.

Where excactly did you find those runes? They don't match with the runic alphabet I have, and I got that from a viking museum here in Denmark... I can scan it and post it here if you want...

ER... Found them on google.it's probably not exact, and I think I may have used the Latin word for endure... In runes... They are the runes that match the models blade, at least from the same set. I might redo it, but I doubt anyone but you guys will call me on it heh heh.
Actually no Ima just redo it with the exact symbols from the frost axe model.

Yeah, read from top to bottom it says "perfer".  Not sure if that means anything in any old Germanic or Scandinavian languages.

Go here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elder_Futhark#Alphabet).

EDIT: Just ran it through a translator, and while I don't speak Latin myself (and so can't verify it), it appears to be the un-conjugated, un-infinitive form of "endure" in Latin.  Latin in Elder Futhark does seem fitting for Space Wolfs, writing High Gothic in their own peculiar Fenrisian script.

Well, heresy grows from idleness as I always say, so I steeled myself and bust out the dremel.

See the strip? I'm going to sink a identical strip of opaqued plexiglass into each side, and run EL wire up and down the strip so that when I add the plate that covers this section and has the runes..

A pale blue light will filter through the plexiglass and the runes will glow
for the first lighting effect anyways

Size comparison and added shiny bits. Not the final location or color of said shinies, but I'll have a pair of those things somewhere on the psu area. Probably in blue.
I certainly hope its big enough.

Took a couple days off while waiting for the EL wire to arrive, should be here tomorrow so in preparation I am setting up the plexiglass windows for the runes. I successfully sunk one side in and got it flush, dont mind the little blemishes in the bondo, as I'll clean them up later and they are going to be covered by the runes anyways.

This is with the rune plate over the top of it, I cant wait to play around with the EL wire and get the lighting just right =D I certainly hope it turns out as cool as it looks in my head.

NIce work! Are you using El Wire strip or wire form?
I would say strip judging by your cut out, it woukd also make the most sense given the project..

One question, shouldn't the light from the power plant be the same color as the enrgy on the blade? I just wonder if that would help the piece look more united and uniform when finished.

But please tell me what is the blue hose? and how flexable it is??!?!*MUST KNOW*!

Keep up the good work!

The red led was just there to show that it will be lit up too.
I ordered some EL wire for this one, and since I haven't ever used the stuff before, I'll figure out exactly how I'm going to use it when it gets here heh heh. The PSUs lighting will also be blue.
The blue hose thing is.. fairly rigid (though it does bend)
I believe it is some sort of electrical wire protector for outdoor electric work. I honestly bought it a long time ago and can't remember. Though it was very cheap ($4) and came in a 8 foot tube. It bends really easily if you warm it up, and then maintains its shape pretty well once its cooled. bought it from a mjaor hardware store in the wiring section.

Edit: Also the round glowly things are actually a gutted LED nightlight I found I Walmart for $3 each. They came in a bunch of cool designs, for everything BUT their intended purpose of course.

This is a nice job. Very nice. I really dig the glowing runes and power source effect, that's very ingenious. I wonder what it would look like if you combined it with that illusion film, or would that be overkill?

Finnlock, if you can't find a hose like the one Djinn has, I know of an alternate source, though it's a bit more expensive than Djinn's $4 hose...

If it wasn't for the lack of flexibility, the hose looks a lot like a pool vacuum hose to me.  I did a little searching and found some blue conduit nicknamed "Smurf Tube", maybe that is what it is?

Awesome Axe so far! Loving your projects Djinn.

The flexible tubing used looks very similar to flexible electrical conduit I use pretty regularly at work,
Its sold @ TLC-Direct (http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Conduit_Flexible_Index/Flexible_Conduit/index.html) in the UK, or most Electrical Wholesalers should sell it. I imagine its available universally as flexible conduit, though I may be wrong =)

I think I may experiment with Illusion Film and some blue Glowire. But I believe in leaving perfection as-is. Out of respect for Djinn's work I'm gonna wait until I see how massively epic the glowing rune effect is.
Title: Runed Frost Axe - Commission
Post by: Djinn on November 09, 2010, 01:03:00 AM
Haha, well I got the EL wire in the mail today, and dammit all its not bright enough! I'll have to use LEDs, but that EL wire will see use elsewhere. Its bright, but it doesnt cast off any light - you know what I mean? It itself is highly visible, but it does not make any of the area surrounding the wire light up. Won't work for what I needed it for, the LEDs will do a fine job though.
Also for the tubing, that electrical tubing Omalleh linked looks pretty much exactly like it, I went by the hardware store today and it was just called "Flexible Tubing", so that probably isn't too helpful.

Pics coming later, I am figuring out the wiring and placement for the leds heh.
Thanks for all the kind responses =D

Working on getting it together in a solid way that still looks cool/fits the theme I got going in my head. All the screws you may see are placeholders while I find a setup I like, but here are some shots of it currently (with a tiny bit of paint, was mostly to see what it would look like)

The white screws are a post style thing with 2 heads, it actually makes the whole thing a ton sturdier and holds the rune plates in place for tinkering before I set them more or less permanently. The second picture shows the thing I am using to connect it to the rest of the axe The majority of it will be internalized so you won't see it, but the sidemost bit (the area on the top and the two bolts) you will see. I will most likely be using the bolts there as the starting point for the power field leads.
Still working on it, since the blade is sort of heavy compared to the rest of it, I'm working out a way to attach it to the head of the axe in a reliable and sturdy way (I have a few good ideas)
Title: Runed Frost Axe - Commission
Post by: Djinn on November 10, 2010, 05:08:00 AM
Bwahaha! The hardest and least fun bits are over! I have successfully come up with a system to solidly keep the blade of the axe in place, along with the handle and the rest of the axe head. This is where the fun part starts, I get to finish the cleaning up and sealing, come up with a paint scheme and paint it, and the loads of other stuff I have planned for the thing. Don't mind the handle, I have plans for it that will bring it up to size, I just had to get it attached.

I'll post pictures of my contraption later, but it essentially enables me to disassemble the ENTIRE axe without damaging paint or having to reseal anything at all. It also mounts the heavier axe blade to the wooden handle, instead of to the hollow power supply head.
I won't be able to disassemble it all the way when I get to the later stages, but I should always be able to remove the axe blade if necessary. This will make doing adjustments and working with electronics 100x easier.

Island hopping to Oahu, taking baby steps you know. I plan to eventually end up in L.A. or a similar city in California eventually, but I cannot fathom jumping out of the country and into the big city and coping well.
Winter is the time to visit Hawaii tbh, during summer we have nasty droughts and everything is dry and hot as balls, in winter its always a pleasant temperature and it rains enough to keep everything green. I am pretty jaded but I've been catching myself appreciating the scenery more recently. The planned move is 8 months away though, so I have plenty of time to work!
If you ever do end up visiting Hawaii though, let me know.

Getting a little closer to finished with the base - sealing it all up and getting it even for the final bondo and first coat of paint tomorrow!

Added a switch to the back, have to clean up the little border still, but its late all ready so I'll have to do it tomorrow.

The base is ddoonnee!
The head is all built, put together, solid and secure. All the internal wiring is done, all the faces attached and more or less set in place. I have been waiting for this moment for weeks! It.. I am so depressed I have to send this away -.-;;

Anyways, tomorrow I will finish up the sealing and properly figure out the paint scheme/weather it. I will also start on the Heraldry for it tomorrow, exciting times!

Anyways Capt, I hope your friend is excited - I sure am x.@

Dude....the awesomeness...to...much...to...take!!!

Really awesome job, you going to leather wrap the handle like your hammer?
Title: Runed Frost Axe - Commission
Post by: Djinn on November 19, 2010, 06:40:00 PM
Yeah, I have to set up a way to seperate the axe into two pieces first though.
Title: Runed Frost Axe - Commission
Post by: Finnlock on November 19, 2010, 07:13:00 PM
Cut the shaft in two pieces and add screw to one side so it can be screwed together?

I'm not sure how large a screw it would have to be to support the weight of the head...
Title: Runed Frost Axe - Commission
Post by: Djinn on November 19, 2010, 07:19:00 PM
I'll do what I did to the hammer probably, a 6 inch metal pipe sheath that gets bolted into the handle at both ends. Easily covered up by the leather and is pretty strong.
The axe is probably going to end up weighing arund the same as the hammer, how I managed to do that I have no idea.

.. Oh well!

would a plastic pipe work? save some weight there...
Title: Runed Frost Axe - Commission
Post by: Djinn on November 19, 2010, 10:06:00 PM
Nah it wouldn't, most of the weight probably comes from the metal contraption in the head. Sadly the blade was too heavy for me to just mount to the plastic frame, so it sort of has to be like that. It's not THAT heavy, but its definitely a 2h Axe (which is what it is supposed to be anyways)

You could insert a wooden dowel into a PVC pipe. What I did with my cahinsword project is take a wooden dowel from Michaels craft store and slipped it in there, then screwed it tight at the end and near the point where the pipe mates with the body.
Title: Runed Frost Axe - Commission
Post by: Djinn on November 20, 2010, 05:54:00 PM
Meh, that would just add additional weight, the dowel I'm using is thick enough for the handle I want. I'm moving slowly this week on the project, mostly due to terrible work hours (9-5s dammit, making painting hard :/)
I'll get updates up soon enough, but life is trying its best to get in my way.

Well, as I'm sort of nearing completion on the Axe, I am pretty much waiting for some inspiration on the final bits and coloring. I moved this thread to the weapons section and renamed it, making a separate thread for the actual armor.. which I am starting now.

Some initial heraldry, might not end up using it on the axe.. but yeah.

Also thank you all for the kind words, they keep me motivated haha.

Well friends, its been a surprisingly long journey for this suckin axe. I am "finished" with it. I haven't fully envisioned the heraldry look and theme I'm going to use for the set yet, so I have decided to stall on adding heraldry till I have a good idea of what I want to do..

BUUUTTTT
The completed base! I had to redo the wiring for the back lights so they are out of commission atm, but imagine those things glowed blue (evenly)

I may add power leads as well (I keep forgetting about them -.-) but that will be at a later stage. I hope Bane likes it!

I also solved the problem of shipping or moving it around while I was tinkering with the design.
Fully disassemble!  Easy(ish) to change batteries! Breaks down in about a minutes time and goes back together in roughly the same!

Wooo!

Well, after a lot of thought I had to back out of doing the full commission for the suit. My current schedule doesn't really allow me enough time to work on anything major like that, on the days I had time I was too exhausted to get up the motivation to start, so for the time being the full suit is sidelined.

In more positive news, the axe is doonneee!
I mean, more done then it was. I took the whole thing apart and filled it with expanding foam, vastly increasing the durability of the PSU of the box. I also finished rigging up the electronics for the back cables. I will be doing some heraldry on it in the next few days, but this is probably the last time I'll update on this.

A fun project for sure, I hope its new owner likes it as much as I do.

I will still be doing smaller commissions though, weapons mostly I think. Just not stuff I need to pull 12 hours days to get anywhere on =P
I believe I owe Capt a sword.

This axe needs a home, perhaps one of you would like to pick it up?

PM me if you are interested, this thread isnt the place for the discussion >=D

I hope I can give the Axe a good home.  Now I just have to figure out where I am going to display it when I'm not smiting the enemies of the Imperium.  Although I now have the strange urge everytime someone asks me for a solution to a problem to scream "I hit it with my AXE!"

Hmm, that could make meetings interesting.  [Boss]"So one of our competitors has launched a product that is direct competition with us.  I need solutions on how we are going to market against them."

[Me]"I hit them with my Axe!"

[Boss]"Ok,I can see how that might look like an option.  Does anyone have a less violent solution.

[Me]"Heretic! There is no quarter given to the enemies of the Emperor."

[Boss]"Riiiigggghhht.  Why don't you take a half day.  Security!'
