Title: Chaplain Build, Black Templar
Post by: doomfist on December 27, 2016, 08:46:56 PM
Started this about 3 months ago, it's half scratch half pep.  The Helmet, Chest, Pauldrons are Pep.  The legs, arms, back pack and weapons (Crozius and Plasma Pistol) will be scratch built.

Love the filigree in the suit...

For sure it take ages to finish that...........

Quick question:  how did you make the filigree on the collar?  Did you use a soldering iron?

Wood Burning tool, functionally identical to a soldering iron.

combination of puffy stickers (the pink ones) and Hot Glue molds (the silverish ones).   They'll just be textures when I Plasdip the whole chest piece then dry brush them up with some Testors gold paint.

They look amazing - you have the impression that they have been done by 3D printer -

Good work and amazing skills

Can I ask where you got the lion handles/door knocker looking pieces? I've been looking for something like that to attach things to the belt of my Dark Angel armor build and I think something like that may be perfect.

Can't speak for his build but I bought ones for my Master Chief at The Home Depot in the hardware section with door handles.

They were labeled as cell phone stands (I know, I don't see how either) I got at my local 99 Cent Store.

Left arm progress, the jewel thing in the center of the gauntlet is temporary, maybe, I just put it there for the photo but I'm kinda liking it.

Almost exactly a year since I started this and I'm *maybe* 1/2 of the way there.  New house, new shop, new 3d printer.  Here's some of the doo-dads I printed up for the stained-glass back splash coming off of the top of the power pack.

Life got busy.  Finally got back to work on this bastard.  Working on the stain-glass cathedral backsplash on the power pack.

Got some more work done on the power pack.

More power pack progress, not 100% sure on the skull-heat exhausts, I plan to have torches coming off the top of the exhaust ports and I'm not sure the skulls are right for that.

And more power pack pics, this time with the stain glass backslash attached (viewed from the rear).  Also finally got my LED Flame Bulbs.   See the attached vid link.

Waiting on parts to arrive to continue work on the suit, so in the meantime I worked on the Bolter portion of the project.    I started to create a 3D printed one but I didn't like the results so I'm  scratch building one.  I kind of improvised the design, it's a 'hog leg' sawed off shotgun inspired design.

Cool weapon build.  Very unique design!

Thanks.  I know it's not exactly canon to the game, but I think it still works.  My son thinks it looks like the HammerBurst from Gears of War.

Working on the back pack again, testing the torch housing/cage.  It's just sitting on the skull for the test, but I will be mounting it to a small dais/stem that will attach to the top of the skull and will lift the torch housing just a few inches above the skull.  Also  included a link to a second test of the animated flame bulb inside the torch cage.  I just threw a paper towel in to diffuse the light.  I plan to use a kind of cotton/cellophane sculpture in the finished torches.    I also printed up and painted some bolter shells for the gun and to have in a bandoleer on the suit.

What did he use for the boots and gloves?
Title: Re: Chaplain Build, Black Templar
Post by: doomfist on January 27, 2018, 06:09:11 PM
the boots are eva foam and wood.  The gloves are field hockey gloves (I think).

Got the Bolter done, (calling it a Typhon Pattern Bolter).  Still mulling over whether or not to make a bandolier for it with a bunch of bolter shells in to it.

Plastidipped an arm today, really happy with the results.   Plastidipped the back pack and used the Metalizer on it, also pretty happy with that, the exhaust pipes turned out a lot better than I though they would.  Then I'm thinking of putting a bolter shell bandolier into the pauldron, what do you think?

thanks, they're leathercraft rivets I got off Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Silver-100pcs-Fashion-Leathercraft-Nailheads/dp/B00ARAB2GE/

Started painting, the left shin and glove.  Was experimenting with various staining on the glove, the shin is just a base of gold model paint.

Looks really good.  For those of you who think you can't get this level of detail, you are wrong. If you look carefully Doomfist is building up detail.  I'm doing the same in my build.  You can add layers upon layers.

Doomfist, this is awesome.  The details is very cool.  What is the base of the gloves?

Got the right arm and gauntlet painted, nothing is permanently attached yet, it's just pined to the arm and the skeleton arch is attached with painters tape just so I can get a feel of how it will look.  I also got the base colors on left pauldron, (the one that will have the Black Templar cross on it).  It's just the base paint, the gold I will weather and age like the gauntlets and the white is just the plasti dip base for the Navajo White colored paint I will end up painting it with.  You can see the can behind the pauldron.

Are all the details made out of foam ? Plus, how are you painting everything ? Airbrush ? Because the detail both on the armor and on the paint are amaizing !
Title: Re: Chaplain Build, Black Templar
Post by: doomfist on April 22, 2018, 12:05:28 PM
Thank you!  The base is all various thicknesses of EVA foam.  The skull / torso device is 3D printed, the rivets are regular metal craft rivets, the filigree is a combo of hot glue molds, plastic 3D craft stickers and puffy fabric paint for t-shirts.  The base paint is rattle can gold spray paint and Gold PlastiDip Metalizer.  It gives it that two-tone gold metal look.  The weathering is done with a base of black metallic acrylic paint brushed into the crevices and back splashes. After that I hit with a combo of black and brown liquid shoe polishes applied with a painting sponge, I highlight the edges with Testors Gold Model paint the same way you would dry brush sliver paint onto your guns to make them look weathered.  Then I hit it the gold parts with triple thick clear enamel, and the black base armor bits with matte finish enamel.  No air brushing yet, when it's all done I might hit with an airbrush if needed.

Legs 90% percent done.   Tested candle placement on the altar topper of the back back, nothing permanent here yet, just pinned together to see what it would look like.  It's a combo of unlit real and battery powered candles.  Then I weathered the gold trim on the left pauldron (see the original plain gold painted one above).
