Title: White Scars Build (COMPLETE)
Post by: drakmar on November 11, 2015, 12:13:23 AM
Well, I have finally begun my White Scars build after months and months of lurking.  I have a general idea of what I want the build to look like.  Interestingly I don't think I've seen any White Scars around the place.

And like many people, I am starting on the Helmet first before I move to the legs (with the possibility of having to redo the helmet later).

I'm using Pilerud's mega pack that I think is some of Shineys simplified for foam patterns etc. If you want to download it it can be found here: http://www.obscuruscrusade.com/forum/index.php?topic=1544.0

And I have been heavily inspired by Sylgian's build: http://www.obscuruscrusade.com/forum/index.php?topic=1625.0

And Cilegray's http://www.obscuruscrusade.com/forum/index.php?topic=2483.0

Well, i've cut out most/all of the bits for the helmet.  Now to figure out how to put them together.

It sort of makes sense.  Once I decided where to start.  Not sure if the glue I'm using is the right stuff.  But I don't want to use Hot Glue as I'm not sure how well it survives in Brisbane heat and if I crank it out, my two kids are likely to plunge their grubby little mitts into the scalding glue.  Does it set quickly?

Yeah hot glue does set pretty fast and in a matter of seconds it's solidifying and just about cool to the touch, depending on how much you put on at once.  Regular temperatures generally aren't the problem, even if it's really hot.  The problem is if you leave the parts in a hot car or if they can get heated up in direct sunlight, the glue will soften and seams will pop apart.  I found out the hard way when I left my first helmet in a car on a day that wasn't even that hot.  It was easy enough to fix, but that's only because I hadn't sealed or painted it.

Okay.  With my own personal horde (children) requiring my time i'm not able to move to fast on my build.

Still trying to work out the pattern for the helmet.  I probably should have had a really really good look at the numbers and where they connect before I started gluing it together etc.

But.. I'm having fun.

Using pins and the fairly slow setting glue I have (but it seems to make a very strong bond and is able to be sanded) it is coming together.  I think I have some gaps that possibly shouldn't exist, and at least one part that I haven't worked out where it goes.

did some more pinning and a little gluing.  I will drop into the HW store tomorrow and see if I can get some better glue for the next bit.

more pinning. more gluing. I think my blatant disregard for the instructions means that I will possibly need a version two.  Possibly later.  I think I might have to cut some of the scraps to fill in the gaps and add more strength.  I have to say though, pins seems to be very very useful.

pinned the helmet fully.  Identified where the gaps are.  Need to do more bevelling.  If I build second one I will do that.

Checked out it's fit.  I think that this is a tiny bit too small for my head (XL head).  This was the full size Pilerud pdf for simplified foam.  I definately think I did the earmuffs incorrectly.

I think that the complexity of the helmet and the relatively small amount of foam required makes it a pretty good first item to make.  Plus if you finish it you have a cool helmet.

more gluing.  Almost all of the seems are joined and almost all the holes are filled with foam/glue.  Next will be the flexible no-gaps for the remaining sections.  Then on to sanding.

Done some filling and sanding to get a better idea of what is happening.

few seems to fill and glue together still.  Once I have finished prepping I might prepare a second helmet and then gesso this one.

I'm obviously impatient.  But since I'm pretty sure that this is going to become my tester helmet, I have done some sanding and added some gesso to it to see how much prep it needs (more).

I like the fit of the helmet (on my head) but the look of it I think that it needs to be bigger.  I might lengthen the face a little on the second one.

Now, having done some sanding, i'm pretty sure that while the glue I have been using is excellent for grip and strength, it is not so good for the sheer amount of dribbling it does.

I'm also pretty confident that I need to do a second helmet with some adjustments.  I think that the second time around I can improve on the base templates to make joins easier and less effort for the way I have been joining them.  (I may not be following the instructions but playing it by what felt right at the time).

I have had a couple of suggestions on the forums of different glues to use.  I'll try Sika Contact Adhesive first.  It's easy to get locally.  Combining it and better (for me) templates should make for less sanding etc.

A cheap pair of mirrored shades just turned up in the mail today.  There were originally intended for me to where out.  But they look stupid... and I didn't know that they were going to be mirrored (I don't like wearing mirrored shades).  Sooooo.. when the pair I ordered for putting in my helmet arrive in a couple of weeks, I think i will be sacrificing these ones to my test helmet.  Depending on which one is easier to see through (these ones are really really dark)

Had a mate at work print out and acetone bath a few of the STLs in the OC downloads area.  Another friend is going to see if she can do me up some "White Scar" versions of the Purity Seals.  I have held them against the prototype helmet as a size reference.

I had them printed in different sizes.

Helmet 2. The Helmeting.

Taking what I have learnt so far from my first helmet (which I am still using for test purposes etc) I have cut and started putting together a new helmet.  I have adjusted the foam template to suit my needs (a little longer in the face due to my extra large head).

And taking Rebecca's advice I have changed glues.  Oh my.  The difference in build speed if phenomenal.  And it is significantly neater.  I have also added some beveled edges where I think it will help in the end product.  In other cases I have decided to go for a square join as it is easier.  This glue also must be used outside or in a well ventilated area.

Helmet 2: The Helmet Strikes Back

Some additional gluing and cutting has taken place.  This is looking much better then Helmet 1: A New Helmet.  The beveled "crest" has turned out quite nicely.  The face is a little "thin" at the moment, however I think once I connect the dome of the helmet together it will turn out nicely.  This glue is the bomb.

Connecting the ridge on the visor part looks like it might turn out quite nicely as well.

Helmet 2: Helmet meets Trufo the Wonderdog

Some more gluing and cutting has taken place tonight.  Having set up a work area downstairs where my darling children don't go will hopefully make my life easier (don't have to pack up fully every time).

I have cut some "slots" into the eyes so I can slide in my aviator lenses.  Seems to fit. I might get some really really thin foam and make a "seal" around them. If I can i might add a red led above the lenses.

Also trying to decide how I want to do the mouth area.  I don't like the look of the 3d print.  I think I might make something bespoke. Possibly use some flyscreen and maybe mount the small skull in the centre of it.

Helmet 2: The Helmet Vaguely Stirs.

This helmet is coming together much better. I have picked up some recommended multipurpose filler that I am testing on Helmet 1.  Helmet 2 also feels much better on my head.

I have glue the front and the crest to the front.  I now just have to glue the remaining 4 sections.  The 3d printed grill doesn't fit my modified helmet.  I am thinking I may go with a custom job using flyscreen and the 3d printed skull. I might even add an Iron Halo around the skull in the grill if there is space.

I will then have to finish the two sections at the bottom of the ear muffs.  This helmet does look a little longer in the face.  But it is certainly more comfortable for me.

Once I have finished gluing, then I will have to sand it back and apply the wood glue/gesso and see how that turns out.

Helmet 2: Into Whiteness

Final build of core of the helmet has come together.  Just realised that during one of my households "get rid of clutter" exercises the flyscreen I was planning on using was disposed of.  I'll have to figure our my plan for the mouth.

I like how the back of the helmet (the little slopes) has turned out.

The filler appears to be going well.  I am sanding it down with an 80 sanding sponge.  This appears to be really good for the curved surfaces.  Once I have it smooth enough I think I will give it a coat of gesso or two with some light sanding in between and then maybe some white glue.

Helmet 2: The Two Whites

Applied a layer of Gesso.  This is helping me see some of the imperfections.  I am wondering how the white glue will change the surface texture and smoothness.

Helmet 2: The Ears Strike Back

Went out and bought some bits for the ears, the tubes, and the grill.  Desk hole thingy, plumbing bits, and a wall vent respectively.

Not happy with the tube I bought.  need to get 4 more of the tube connectors.  Don't want to glue it all together until I have finished prepping and painting.

Trying to decide where to put the skull.  I think I have settled on the traditional forehead placement.

Additional Gesso has taken place.

Helmet 2: The Red Dead Redemption

Finally finding my old paints, I managed to revive a Crimson Red.  I have painted a test version of the Biker markings that I want to go with onto the helmet.  I think it looks really good.  I am also waiting on the electronics for the glowing eyes to arrive something mid to late January.  Some nice Red CL tube that runs on 2 AA batteries.

Next I will have to make some seals/eyeliner to go around the lenses to make them fit and look nicer.  I also have to seal it with wood glue and then pick up and paint it with some White Plasti-dip.  (feel free to tell me if I am going down the wrong path)

I have spotted Sylgian's Power Fist.  i'll be buying myself some of that action and getting a mate to print out the Power Fist I think.

I also think that I might make my persona of the 4th Company.  Possibly make it a Captains armour (the Kahn, this one is called the Master of Blades) and setup a nice power Tulwar.

Helmet 2: The uh.. I'm running out of sequels-ing.

Attached the tubes.  Happy with that.  Just got the electrics today.  But they don't make the eyes glow enough.  I think I will need to pick up some red gauze (tewl?) and give that a go.

Chest.  The Chestables.

Today I managed to begin cutting out the template for the chest section.  A few pictures of others builds are helping me get my head around it.  And I noticed something about the print outs that I hadn't before (probably because I wasn't really looking), at the bottom of each it says row1/col1, row2/col1 etc.  So for example the front bit is made up of row 1, col 1-3, row 2, col 1-3.  Nifty.

Chesty Bonds.

Finally found some time to finish this part of the templates for the chest.  Cut it out, transferred it to the foam and cut the foam.

Now.. I just need figure out how it comes together.  Although finally, after staring at few progress shots of other people, I just realised that I have been looking at the template upside down the whole time.

More work on the chest is happening.  Have to refer to the templates to figure out the neck section in my head better.

Torso of Destiny.

More work on the upper chest.  I have some ideas on how I would do it differently if I do another one.  I might have to narrow the chest a little.  But I want to do the waist and crotch first.

I'm relatively happy with how the back is coming out.

And I found http://www.obscuruscrusade.com/forum/index.php?topic=2761.0 link to the youtube how to space marine armour handy.  The 30secs section I managed to watch was exactly the bit I needed to see.  Cutting the little divots out of the back (little v's) to allow for better bends came in handy.

Post by: drakmar on March 05, 2016, 05:28:35 AM
i'm pretty happy with how the upper chest is going.  It has let me see that I might need to shave a little off the bottom of the helmet.  But not much if I align it correctly.  I also think that I might have to take in the lower part of the chest slightly.  But I will wait until I have done the waist and hip sections before I make that call.

Chesteriffic!

Shifted the collar as it didn't seem right.  Also did a test fitting.  Came together quite well.

And the last picture is after some light sanding.  I think the seams will come up (or be hidden) really well by the time I'm done.

Next, I will have to do the waist and groin.

Abdomen all Hope!

Continued working on the torso. After some consultations I have glued the waist to the groin. Things didn't line up well so I added the base belt and then some filler. I think I will add some extra to the top of the waist to ensure when I move I don't have the chest slip off. I'm reasonably happy with the result. I have also adjusted the butt and added some reinforcement with the edge bits from the squares.
I will likely add some more trim to the leg holes.  It will stiffen it up and look better.  Possibly a small triangle around the butt section on the sides.

Chest Wings: No matter what Jessica says, they are not made with real Chests.

I printed out the Chest Wing file in Pilerud's file pack.  I then coloured it in a little, made it slightly bigger, traced it out, hand drew a White Scars emblem etc.  I then carved out wings with a blade and did some sanding on one of them.  It's turning out ok.  I think the wings might need to be a little bigger (i had to do a second lightning bolt), but I can't tell until after I have reached and made the shoulders.

Torso of Torosestiny.

Whilst doing some house painting with White Paint, I did some undercoating of the torso.  This allowed me to spot some flaws that need to be patched.  I added some more foam to the collar to fill it out and to cover some flaws.

I have decided to go for a round belt buckle.  Hopefully I can sculpt something to go on it.  Not sure what I am going to use for that however.  I can't seem to find my supersculpy and I don't think that doing it straight into foam will get the result I want.

I have also added some edge strengthening.  I'll be adding some more to the chest and groin/waist soonish.

Torn between two Shoulders... Feeling like a Space Marine.

Added some support foam to the edge. I have pick up some thin ply to make the actual edge. And some more foam for the "trim" decoration. I'm happy with the size of them.

Now I need to add some of the internal foam (I have some of the camping foam with the holes in it that will do for bulking it up).  I'll also have to print out the arm templates soon.

White Scars Build - Progress Shot.  Shoulders are about the right size.  Will have to scour the threads to see the various methods of attachment.  I also have worked out that I will need some fans on the inside.  It's cool now, inside, and at night.  Summer will destroy me.  And I have to get some rigging on the inside of the torso soon to make this easier.

Power Dao version 1 build.

due to running out of glue and time to get said glue, time to work on a power sword.  I had some thin ply that I'm cutting to shape.  with a bit of pine for the handle and some off cuts to help shape.  Out came the jig-saw and the wood glue.  Lets see how this goes.

Arm-a-geddon.

A few extra shots of my torso showing that I have glued them together.

And I have begun the arms.  I have narrowed the wrist slightly from the Pilerud files.  I also decided that the template in the pack for the elbows was overly complicated.  I used it as a vague guide and made two elbows out of two bits rather than one bit with lots of cuts.  I'm happy with that.  Now to buy some bolts etc to join them up.

I haven't made the internal rigging yet.   Once I have made the legs I will work how how it all hangs together.
Title: Re: White Scars Build

I have sculpted a belt buckle.  I will have to work out how to cast it in resin later.

I have also finally started on the legs.  Each leg appears to require 6-8 60cm x 60xm foam mats.  I of course have 6 with off cuts.  Hopefully I can build the knees by joining the off cuts together.  Otherwise... I will have to by more.  Sigh.

After I have everything built, I will then have to figure out how to hang it all together.  Then I can start finishing parts.  I don't want to join things until I can figure out how tall I need to be.  I'm 6'2".  I think I might only need to add 5-15cms worth of stilts/platforms.

Finally got some time to work on my build. Put the last leg together. Then I put everything together to admire my completed base... and notice a lack of knees.... I'll be kneeding them... ba dum ching.

I think I will only need a 2 or 3 inch (5-7.5cm) set of platforms.

Shoulders: I managed to get some more foam to fill out the shoulders significantly today.  The trim didn't quite work out (pic 3&4) they way I had in my brain.  But I'm happy enough.  I also have some ideas on how to beef up the inside to make it feel more like armour.  Almost at the point where I can start joining all the parts together.  Once I have done that I will start tarting up my armour with decals/honours etc.

White Scars Build. The base of the shoulders are now complete. I have also started scratch building the universal joints I'm am going to use to mount the shoulders. The circle inside is 20mm and the "arms" are 25mm pvc pipe. I'll slide the 25mm onto a 20mm section that will be attached to the torso. Or something like that.

It was pretty easy to make the UJ.  A hacksaw and a stanley blade worked fine.  A drill for the holes and some bolts.

Update.  If this uploads it's because my new phone makes the pictures way too big.  I have built the mounts for the shoulders, started the knee joints, and so on.  I had to remove a little under the armpit of the chest to get the arms to sit better.  Slowly adding to the design of the shoulders.

I think I will need about 3-4 inch stilts to get the proportion correct.

Can't wait to see more progress on your build as I'm quite the White Scars follower as well. My next build will be a White Scars, too. Also, good job on the shoulder support!

Cheers.  I've also started FB page Drakmar's Foundry.  Currently I'm waiting until I can get spare cash and a visit to the hardware store to buy aunt aluminium flat bar for the knee joints.  I have made a test platform but until I get the knees sorted it's stalled.  I should keep finishing the shoulders.

Leg Day.   happy with the aluminium flat bar.  Extra larger washers may be needed.

Not overly happy with the detached knee.  It doesn't flow/move neatly.  Probably needs some webbing to make it move up and down when the knee bends.  However I may just attach it to the lower leg.  Still decided.  Need both legs sorted with platforms and the feet before I do anything permanent.

I'm quite happy with how the Crux Terminatus is turning out.  Layered 2 mm foam with a little bit of carving.  I will heat gun it and sand it soon.

Full size pics are on my facebook page.  I just realised that the last few updates are tiny pictures.  I can't get it right.  They are either massive (and can't be uploaded) or tiny tiny pictures.  Sigh.

building an armour stand.  Out of PVC pipes.  I bolted two t junctions to the platforms.  The PVC just slots in and the armour stands.

I found a new product Foam Clay  ( https://www.luminsworkshop.com/collections/eva-foam/products/ultra-light-foam-clay-300g-white ).

I have been using it for Gap Filling and also to sculpt a new belt buckle and links.

Using the foam clay to make the belt buckle and new links.

It's super light, just as durable as normal EVA.  Almost as good at detail as synthetic clay.

I have to make 16 of these for the belt links.  I have now made one out of foam clay it is has started drying.

Only 15 more to go.  I first make the template design with the Sculpy.  Fortunately because I am not baking it I can just wipe the central design and put in a new one.  The photos are of the Scuply process.

Then I make the next out of Foam Clay.  I'll take a video at some point of that.

And I have started the backpack. I don't know why I have such a mental block about it.

Backpack: The Backpackening.

I didn't end up folding the vents.  Or following the pattern fully.  I went off script.

Backpack 4: The Wrath of Pack.

To join the backpack to my torso and be able to remove, I have created a joining method using 20mm PVC pipe.  I cut the perfect holes using a pvc pipe I have sharpened on the inside with a dremel.

I, along with many other fans would riot if they made Ds9/VGR in HD and kept it exclusive to that damned pay service. I want to OWN my Star Trek.
