Title: A Space Wolf named StormClad
Post by: ViolentDream on August 18, 2013, 06:25:00 PM
Hey guys, Iíve finally found the time to type everything up and post here. First off, Iím overly stoked to have found this community. Iíve always wondered about creating my own Astartes power armour (yes, it has definitely been in my bucket list since about 5 years ago until I almost completely forgot about it), and seeing Imperial Gothic and Henrik Pilerudís photos online really got me thinking into doing my own. Started going through Obscurus Crusade, June 2013. Realized I should have looked online earlier for actual WH40k Space Marine armour, and decided immediately Iíd get committed to this. Iím no cosplayer but I owe it to myself as a big WH40k fan to wear my own suit of armour!

Well, enough about thatÖhereís my build, which is a Work-In-Progress. Iíll be doing a 7-foot scale Space Wolf Mark VII power armour. To get an idea as to his look and proportions, I rendered the Space Marine game rips:

Yes, the end-product should look something like that, hopefully :D

And while waiting for free time to actually work on this to come, did some sketches.

Obviously, I did not have that much of free time on my hands since I couldnít even put color on my drawings T_T

Fluff: Well, I gave him a name, or at least, a part of a nameÖlast nameís Stormclad, first nameÖhmm, still thinking about it. Anyway, this guyís a Grey Hunter, with his chapterís Wolf Lord being the great Logan Grimnar, and fortunately for him, the guy gets Ďpromotedí to being the Great Wolf. Should I ever have more time to write the background story, I will. For now, all I have is a Ďsurnameí. And with that, idea, these will be what Iíll be having for his armour markings:

Finally able to post my build journal! Here it goes the line of photos with captionsÖ

Initially, I had planned on doing a pep to fiberglass/bondo build. But after computing the prices of the materials and the my overall skill level with this step (har), I decided Iíd just look at this pepakura piece for inspiration.

Oh, and yes, Iím a bit wary that my 2-year old daughter (a swirling tornado of chaos) might get her hands on the fiber glass and bondo solutions. Not safe with my workshop being an open area and all.

So I went foam. Started going through Henrikís (and Shineyís, of course) foam-optimized patterns.

July 27, 2013.

Started with the helmet:
(http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n463/ViolentDream/WH40k/Space%20Wolf%20armor/Build%20photos/Build%20Journal%20800x600/07-27-2013-patterns-foam_zps7118755d.jpg)

Main Material: Craft Foam. Sizes: 15mm (large parts like the torso, pauldrons, etc.), 8mm (helmet and other details), 6mm (details)
Tools: X-acto knife with several legions of blade refills, Glue gun with about 200 chapters of glue-llets. Steel ruler of the Imperium, and a Fenrisian rubber cutting mat.

While cutting, always remember to bevel edges that will form curves. About 45-degree angled cuts should do. And donít worry about jagged slices. Unless youíll be having Mr. Perfect slap you around for inside-out critique class, itís alright. ;)

August 10, 2013.

Took me awhile to find free time to start on this again. Went out to the local shoe supply store to get this:

Itís 8x8 feet of 15 mm craft foam for US$ 15.00. Boy does it smell good. @_@ Almost knocked me out.

Started on the torso and pauldron patterns immediately!

Ended up with lots of paper patterns to store neatly (neatly?! Yeah right).

August 11, 2013.

Proceeding as desperately wanted!

(http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n463/ViolentDream/WH40k/Space%20Wolf%20armor/Build%20photos/Build%20Journal%20800x600/08-11-2013-torso-pattern_zps74dbf6cb.jpg)

Again, never forget to cut or bevel angles when necessary. The torso had plenty of these:

August 12, 2013.

First pauldron done! Retiring for the night. Whew.

August 13, 2013.

Woke up to this!

Well, not really, just stacked them up before lunch. Noticed that the unmodified pauldron on the ride side is really huge. I made cuts on the left one as from what Iíve read from Sylgian and Henrikís builds. Took out about 4.5 inches from the height. You need that arm movement, man, so best shorten them pauldrons accordingly.

August 18, 2013.

Got time off from chores and attending to the family. Plus, thereís a wicked thunderstorm outside (Thunder from Fenris??) so staying indoors allowed me more time to work on this again. I wasnít satisfied with the big eyes and big mouth of the helmetís faceplate. Decided to redo it and make it look angrier (smaller, slanted eyes with better-scowling mouth).

Also had to improvise on the Space Wolf helmet details Ė no tubes for me. This is based on the mini and with some help from the game rips (You can see this from my profile avatar).

Side view:

This thinking of what roundish material to use for the holes in the ears. Need to shop around for that, I guess.

Hereís the current status of the helmet, torso and pauldrons:

While taking a break for today, thought about...

Weapons? Hereís my list of what to arm Stormclad with, in order of priority:

1.   Power Axe Ė Space Wolf. Ďnuf sed.
2.   Meltagun Ė why this, you ask? Coz damn it looks nastier than a bolter with itís bigger barrel!
3.   Bolt pistol Ė will make a leather holster for this as what Iíve seen in some minis and artwork.
4.   The mandatory bolter Ė Should still have time for this but Iím prioritizing the first 2 items above.

Aand, I made a checklist on all the parts, weapons, accessories Iím planning to build. Also, I divided the specific tasks to be done to each part (building it, filling the seams, etc.) just to keep track of everything and also to record progress.

Will update again next post or when I get the time to work on this again

It's... So... ORGANIZED!!!!

Helluva start man, you set the bar /high/... How is that 15mm working for you? I would have never though to check a shoe supply store! I know an apprenticed cobbler, so maybe this will be my solution!

We have a bloodclaw, several Grey Hunters, and a Wolf Guard, and when i'm done there'll be a Wolf Priest... We're getting a regular Pack! We need a  emoticon!!!

Cheers on that, brother! It's great that you did your Wolf Priest, the pack needs you greatly.  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' />

The 15mm is alright. I thought it would be too thick to shape and cut, but really, it just needs to be guided into shape and is like butter to a knife when you use a sharp Xacto knife.

Updates...

August 19, 2013
Had some time off since work got cancelled due to very bad weather. Couldnít run out to buy a new sheet of foam so I had to make do with the last few feet of my white 15mm.

Fortunately, the patterns I was able to fit into it are the 2 forearms, 2 elbow pads, and 1 upper arm.

(note that I adjusted the brightness so that the patterns can be seen over the white foam).

Spent the day tracing, cutting, gluing and reinforcing all 5 parts. No time to sand and fill tonight. Figured Iíd do that once I get all the parts built.

I also measured the print-out of the pep file on top of the cut-out foam patterns and adjusted the size to get closer to the pep fileís width. I shaved off about 1.5 inches on the foam (you can see it in the background).

Hereís the current progress pic so far.

Notice the forearms arenít as perfectly rounded as it should be. I plan on achieving that effect when I get to putting in a (perfect) circle of foam inside to be the main reinforcement/shape of the forearms. Already did that with the upper arm, though, but havenít cut in a hole for my arm.

Will keep updating things this week especially since I can get another foam sheet during a public holidayÖjust hope that the weather clears up.

August 26, 2013

Was able to squeeze in just a few hours the past week, so progress has been slow. I finished the abdomen and the cod piece, as well as all the Left parts of everything below them. Iíll need another sheet of foam for all the other pieces.

August 31, 2013

Got the new sheet of foam this morning and immediately set-off to tracing and cutting during the rest of the day.  This goes for all the Right-side pieces. I realized that it gets easier / faster since Iíve already done this on the opposite side. Fewer mistakes now, hehehe.

Done gluing and assembling everything by 12 midnight. This done amidst a shower of chores in the house, so yeah, managed production pretty well today. ;)

Was also able to dig these up while looking for aluminium tubes for the stand:

My old random orbital sander and my Dremel 3000. Iíll be using these for sanding, obviously.

Also posting what Iíll be using for the helmet mouth grills.

These are Disney Art Attack wooden sticks that I stumbled upon in the local bookstore. The daughter keeps insisting these are hers, as sheís an avid Art Attack fanatic. :/ These will be used later on in the detailing stage.

But before anything else, will need to set everything up for the functional dress-up.

Next up: Reinforcement and Rigging Ė but thatís for the next update, which I hope will be soon

All fine now, thanks to our Mod Squad  ;)

Well, just when I wanted to post an update, it seems that my thread has been demolished by the Forums migration  :-\

Any Mods can check on this please? Tho I did already report this, just hope I can get word on how to go about this or start from scratch?

Hm...looks good...but I think you cutted to much from the shoulders...mine are 3cm shorter in height and this is enough.

i like the vent modifications on the side of the helmet, It's got me thinking about using the missile launcher variant of the mk 7 now, the one with the two pipes on one side and grilles on the other

You're actually right about that, I had to add about 3 inches, though this came to my benefit as I used the space and additional foam as a detail. Will post pics to show you what I mean, in my next update.

Thanks, I've made improvements on it as well so the curves look cleaner. Will post pics soon  :)

It's been a busy couple of weeks at work so I've made little progress...but at least I'm done with the rigging.

Long weekend coming up and this is what I'm working on tonight...

Adding speaker grills to the helmet (ears, forehead, vox boxes, mouth openings) - variant to the ears, picked up a pair of kids' drink tumbler lids and I thought they were sturdy enough and had the right size for the holes I made in the sides of the helmet.

Power Axe (finishing 3d modelling)

Backpack - had to buy a new printer to print the templates but had to tweak my unfold of the wolf heads. I was in the process of moving unfolds when I took this screenshot so there are a few pages still unfinished.

Meltagun - finally get to print you out!

More updates after the weekend when I'm done with the above. And rigging photos to come soon. :)

Very nice dude, but I think that a Space Wolf should have a twin headed axe.

Like this:

Or a scaled down version of Logan Grimnar's beast:

Putting up old stuff from September here...

Stilts

About 12-13 inches - Used several layers of 15mm foam, with wood supports - partial on the heel, center foot, and vertical front and back.
Had packing foam for the center

I used my old work shoes that I haven't worn since 2007 (used them for about 5 years). They're now reinstated as Dreadnoughts (not yet Venerable, but I hope they last long enough). Screwed them onto wooden platforms supported by the vertical wooden supports, as well as the foam.

I had to redo my pauldrons, as while mounting them onto the torso, I felt they were just too heavy. I may have reinforced them too much inside with thick foam.
I unfolded my own version and used 8mm foam. It looks saggy in the photos as I am still reinforcing it carefully with thick foam inside. I plan on balancing form and weight.

Here's a photo in early October of the partially rigged suit:

The "diaper" is loose here as I didn't secure it yet when the photo was taken. With the advice I got on the thigh straps, I went ahead and did those, too. Next update I'll have the fully rigged (with backpack) suit.

Currently, here's where I've left off:

Pauldrons needed reinforcement, helmet done with the grills (ears, forehead, vox, mouth), backpack partially done.

Backpack's about 60% done - I put in the mesh inside (it's plastic fencing sprayed silver). The wolves' heads will still need smoothing and proper mounting on the backpack.

And yes, I am so itchin' to move on to putting details on each part...just finishing the basics, and I hope this week gives me that opportunity! :)

Djinn made a pretty boss power axe...

Well, after a lot of thought I had to back out of doing the full commission for the suit. My current schedule doesn't really allow me enough time to work on anything major like that, on the days I had time I was too exhausted to get up the motivation to start, so for the time being the full suit is sidelined.

In more positive news, the axe is doonneee!
I mean, more done then it was. I took the whole thing apart and filled it with expanding foam, vastly increasing the durability of the PSU of the box. I also finished rigging up the electronics for the back cables. I will be doing some heraldry on it in the next few days, but this is probably the last time I'll update on this.

A fun project for sure, I hope its new owner likes it as much as I do.

I will still be doing smaller commissions though, weapons mostly I think. Just not stuff I need to pull 12 hours days to get anywhere on =P
I believe I owe Capt a sword.

Sadly it looks like a lot of the picture links are broken, but you should still take a look.

Thanks, Finn. I saw this a few months back and tried looking for it again. I actually thought about the whole light thing inside and will go ahead with it, but I'll be using transparent acrylic on the "sharp" edges of the axe so that it glows blue with the power field. Actually ran out of foam mats for the 2nd axe head  :-\ I'd need the weekend to buy another sheet.

done with the backpack build...

I haven't closed the front panel (where the skull is) and the sides of the pack, as I'll be installing the battery pack there and then the ventillation fans up to where the grills are...

Still have to detail the part that's near the back of the helmet but I'll need to scout around for more hose and some doodads for that...
Man, the backpack is heavy, even with a lighter build (thinner foam) like that...it's pulling the torso upwards. Guess I'll have to build the abdomen part this week to stop the pull.

For the pauldrons, added a curved lining and have grills inserted into the inner sides, as well as in the bottom.

This week, aside from the abdomen, I'll be putting in detail on the wolf heads, aand putting in pauldron chapter markings. Will be cutting and tracing these out tonight...

Hi guys...it's been a long while since I posted back here.

Anyway, finally had the free time again to get back to work on StormClad.

Here's the current progress on the chest piece...still some trimming needed on that diamond.

Got chapter markings up on both pauldrons....

Also, my over-sized Meltagun needs some more cleaning up...and also started on the Power Axe...

This week I'll be sealing the gaps up :)

Also, great to see that a lot of new projects have popped up here, more power, OC! \m/

Another overdue update! Seems like the only times that I can spare time for my power armour is when work's off because of a super typhoon...
Anyway,  current state is still into building, which is for the wolf heads for the backpack.  Then off to the Gesso / spray filler coat. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/07/1c2bbb7336cc984e2eda171226a30cc0.jpg)

Thanks,  guys.

Aside from this,  I decided to try these LCD monitor wall mount brackets,  which I will test for the pauldron mounting.  Since I got them for free,  might as well,  right.

Also tested out 5 layers of Gesso straight on the foam, and added  2 layers of chrome spray paint... Results are acceptable, with good tolerance for flexing and holding up the paint. It does not flake or peel off.

Update on progress...
I applied battle damage on all the armor pieces.  Not much,  but are mostly cuts,  lasgun blasts with impace damage.
Have gone into the Gesso coating and applying grey primer on all the parts.  Gesso coats are 6 layers for the helmet,  and 3 coats for all the others.  Primer coats are 3 layers.

Waiting for the arms to dry up. Should be done with that later and will include in the pic. I may have to resume painting next weekend when I get the time. All the gray here is primer gray only.  By then,  I will have the proper gray base coat mixed.

Love the idea for mounting the shoulders, How are they for mobility? I've got mine strapped up with webbing and buckles at the minute and they restrict my arm movement so I'm going to be looking at modifying them soon
Title: Re: A Space Wolf named StormClad
Post by: ViolentDream on March 12, 2015, 07:44:03 PM
Very moveable... You just have to set them up prior to mounting them whether you want loose movement or a bit rigid.  It far outweighs my old mounting which were just round pegs that did restrict arm movement. Will do a video sometime to show you.

Okay, lots of things have happened in the real world that have pulled me off this project... I'm moving to a new,  better job... And while I'm transitioning,  I've had more opportunities to work on StormClad again.
First off,  was finally able to get the best,  closest mix of paint to Citadel's Fenrisian Grey and Russ Grey... (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/13/9cfe21bac9e98da3cae2b6b7a6a9931e.jpg)
It's Senate Blue and Cottage Blue.  Mixed digitally at the local DIY paint section.
Went on painting everything with Senate Blue as primary coat...

Also finished off my new boots'stilts...

And did the highlights with Cottage Blue...

That's currently where I left off.  Dry-brushing this weekend,  as well as finishing off on the backpack starting with these guys...

Just a few suggestions good sir. I'm loving the progress on this.

I think that the fur on the rear should be over the ass plates, not under.

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

The only references that I could find quickly were from the THQ Space Marine game.

And I feel that your cape should either be bigger, or hang over your backpack, otherwise you might lose the effect once the backpack is on?

Maybe track down some fake wolf fur (the black, grey and white mottled shit), and use that instead, if you can't figure out how to add colour to areas on your existing fur?

Just suggestions, put the combat blade away...

seriously, brother, your comments are very much appreciated. Today, I'm using dark dye on the fur since I've already looked for and found nothing on gray or light colored fur here. Nothing etched in stone or ceramite yet on where to put the fur cape and other parts so I will certainly be trying out your suggestions on the placement ;)

Not sure where your from, but here in the mid west coyotes are plentiful. They are super easy to skin and tan also. not to mention all the cool bones and skulls you get with them. And they are one of the easiest animals to hunt. It might be worth looking into for the best natural fur.

Unfortunately,  where I'm from,  no access to natural furs so just faux, and even that presents very limited choices :/ hence, making the most of what I got.

Violent I have been saying for awhile now we have enough Space Wolves around that we need to get a pack photo shoot together of all of us representing the Wolves of Fenris!!! Prev has some great suggestions on fur color and placement. My brothers fur loin cloth went over the ass armor (hahaha) that he wanted and looked to me correct. If you could get some more length on the cape that would be great, if not I would cover the backpack with it instead like a drape. Your armor is looking killer and cant wait to see more!!!

Yeah, let's have that Space Wolves pack photo done! We have to, hehe.
For my fur cape and loincloth, I'll do some tests and get you guys to look at it again for suggestions.

Started work on a powerfist.
I also plan on attaching retractable glowing lightning claws soon.

Had to use Henrik's photo guides  since I don't have a 3d printer like Sylgian (tho I did buy his STL's).

Here's what the backpack looks like...still pending wash, weathering and battle damage paint.

Currently having issues with the backpack dragging back the torso. I think I'll be reinforcing the inside of the torso so it does slide back on my shoulders.

Wow, it's been awhile since I logged in! I've finished this suit for some years now. Will post pics just to *close* this thread for StormClad :)

Here's the Powerfist, with the Wolf's head...notice the bolt pistol in the background...

I went with the marionette fingers...

But eventually, I went with having a different finger mechanism for quicker, tighter response...

And also the claws...will just be part of phase 2...

Then had to make the Bolt Pistol using MDF board as handle...

I had to make an opening in the gloves so that the handle support goes into the forearm...

Helmet electronics and lenses. I used transparent protective glasses as the eyes, then spray-on tint and painted on some layers of acrylic transparent Red...

Finally arrived at my favorite phase of the entire project: Battle Damage and Weathering! I went wild with the Dremel, Xacto knife, and the soldering tool. Silver on brushes and black on the airbrush for the painted damages...

And StormClad is done! I'll take a proper video to showcase the electronics, especially the sound effects. I used a bluetooth receiver to play Dawn of War phrases from my tablet to the speakers in the abdomen.

I'll probably get off to phase 2.0 / upgrades in a few months. For now, he's on display in my house.

Until then, thanks everyone for visiting my thread. It was a solid 3+ years and I had fun creating StormClad \m/

That's it for me! I can go catch up on my books again ;)

Dude! Thank you! And also, a bigger thank you for posting a message here. I checked the pictures on my thread, and that damn Photobucket scam has hostaged my photos. Time to download everything from their site and upload on better services!
