Title: Pilerud's Cosplay's Blood Angels Space Marine build
Post by: Pilerud on February 08, 2013, 09:54:00 AM
I'm not so active on the forum, but I want to share the experiences from my build in whatever help it can be to fellow builders. My downloadable file is continuously updated for every major modification I make. Read and watch EVERYTHING in it thoroughly before asking questions, please. And remember, I am no expert and can't answer everything, this is my first pepakura+foam build. With that said, I wish everyone the best of luck, and hope this helps and inspires to make more power armors around the world!

Info:
I scratchbuilt this Warhammer 40,000 Blood Angels Space Marines Sternguard Veteran, 1th company, 5th squad, costume as a fan.
It was first shown at The Scandinavian Sci-fi, Game & Film Convention 2012 in Stockholm, Sweden. (It has since then been improved.)

Videos:
Playlist with videos of the armor (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEZuANeT8vUPI30Iy-gxYRbUDKYQL1f8b)

Facebook page:
facebook.com/PilerudsCosplay (https://www.facebook.com/PilerudsCosplay)

Suggestions and templates/blueprints:
Download the "simplified for foam" pepakura files, originally found on this forum, Hundreds of pictures from the build. And some of my own blueprints made for modifications and details. For example the backpack was significantly redesigned to look more like the miniatures. Not a complete tutorial, but alot of help in construction. All the things I figured out for myself, I give to the public to use. I update this file from time to time, so downloading it again at a later time gives you more pictures, information, and so on.

* Download pepakura templates and pictures from my build here. And many general building suggestions. (http://pilerud.com/download/save/pepakura_sm.zip)
(Updated 2015-02-08. Almost 2 GB, so be patient if download takes a while. And if it fails, just try again.)

* You can also download only the PDF (that is included in the full download above) with the general building suggestions. (http://pilerud.com/download/save/Pilerud_sm_build_suggestion.pdf)

No comissions. I only create for myself as a hobby.

About 450 hours in the making.

Weight: The current weight is 26 kg.

Height: About 210 cm/7' (I am about 183 cm/6' without armor). (To be able to move around easier and be able to use my own hands, the size is a compromise between proper SM size and a normal human.)

Method: Pepakura (foam+hot glue) and some modifications to make it look more like the miniatures. And some aliminum rods, and screws and electronics. I used 935 as scale on the pepakura files. (Some exceptions. See the pepakura files in that folder for details.)

Cost of materials: At the present about 3000€. (And then I have tried to make it cheap.) The cost of the foam is only about 400€. The rest is all the other small things you need. (See separate document for more details.)

Getting dressed takes about 15 minutes, and requires a servitor and a short ladder/chair. First I put on the waist+thighs piece like pants with a belt and shoulder straps inside. Then step up on a short ladder and steps inside the shins and feet. The servitor puts in the pins so the knees connect. The top chest goes over the head like a sweater. The arms are attached to the sholders, and are connected on the pins at the side of the chest. Gloves on, and the servitor puts the helmet on. I can't reach the helmet myself. Off to fight xenos! (AKA "Pose for Pictures".)

(deep breath...)

I have a few questions/ requests dude:

1) Can you kneel or run in the suit?

2) How did you do alll the electronics in the suit?

3) Is there any chance of you doing a build/ tutorial thread showing how you built the suit, sharing any hints or tips?

4) Any chance you could build me a suit (dreaming, of course...)?

I'm sure the rest of the community would benefit from any advice you'd care to share with us.

One final thing - GO THE BLOOD ANGELS!!!!!!! FOR  SANGUINIUS!!!!!!!!!

Would you be able to post a "pattern" for the aluminum ring you used in the belt region and the shoulder rig as well?

This is spectacular! [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /> Just been through your download and you've built what i had in my head. I work in a motocross store and i've been studying our knee braces as an internal hinge for the legs. You got it spot on [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /> Proportions are excellent! I've just helped my pal build a Kharn costume so i'm gonna have to build my own now [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' />

No need. It i just a aluminum strip. Bent in the shape af the armour (chest, shoulder, or whatever need extra sturdyness. And hotglued. It is also a way to get the right "bend" on stuff like the sholders. I used an about 2 cm wide aluminum strim, hardend kind, from a DIY store. Where they have all sorts of aluminum strips (profiles?).

Love the work mate, Your scale is perfect for what I want and has caused me to up my build from 850 to 935, although as a complete glutton for punishment mine will be pep & fiber, which is going to be a little on the heavy side.

Beautiful work!

Holy Mother of all things... this file is taking for ever to DL!

What am I downloading!  THIS BETTER BE SISTERS OF BATTLE PRON! LOL

After I get it all downloaded do you mind if I reduce the file sizes and compile it into an easier file to share?

I have reduced the size to about half. I have no idea why it is so slow for some people, it is not for me. For me it takes about 10 minutes to download. Guess it depends on where you are located. But just be patient, and thankful I provide it for all who want it.

I will not be thankful! LOL  I am going to whine and complain... Stomp my feet and throw an all out hissy fit!

I want an Oompa Loompa NOW!!! MAKE IT GO FASTER!

Seriously, thanks for the files... I'm just feel like a kid on christmas waiting to open presents...

Where are you hosting it?  If you need a second host let me know I have some space you could use.

Peace,

The one I downloaded was 1.05 Gigs.  Given that you have stuff from a Stockholm con, I assume you are in Sweden?  For US based people you are going to have a bit of a slowdown just due to the intercontinental connections causing issues.

Yes both me and the files are in Sweden. They are hosted on a webserver, same as my website. (The link reveals that much I gather.) Well, from what I have heard, it taks from half an hour to at the most a few hours to dowload my 300 hours of work. And it is updated every time i finnish a major modification and  show all the building pictures, plans and stuff for that as well. If you want it, just deal with it. Leave it over night or whatever.  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />

No, It actually is "faceplate" in the filename of the 1006 scale file. Anyway, that is because of the material thickness (I used 8 mm foam) the helmet got a little bigger, even thou I tried to adjust for the "expantion". So, I hade to make the face plate slightly bigger for it to fit.

There are of course modifications like that on EVERY piece. As I have written in the text in the download. Mostly it is very easy to cut of the excess here and there. Some pieces demands a little more thinking.

Great work, and excellent documentation of the build. It's the little stuff that makes such a big difference. What did you use to fill the foam seams on your armour?

It is explained in the text document, and there are pictures showing it from the build. Painters acryllic "filler". Dries to a rubbery form.

Hello there! Just popped in to say this is the best build out there next to the official THQ marines (IMO) and you, my Swedish friend, should be incredibly proud of your work.

Thank you for uploading your painstakingly crafted files for us plebeians to use and abuse. I look forward to seeing what abominable replicas of this suit come from those files - you advance the community years with your work and I thank you for it!

Carry on!

further question, if you don't mind me being annoying about this  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' />

I'm finding it rather hard to get bullet marks and claw scrapes right for battle damage - how did you do yours or are there any tips you can give to make them look 'realistic'?

-editting in another question that i remembered!-

did you seal the foam with the same painter's filler you used for the seams or was that just to make an pretty seam line?

"Dremel"-type machine. And paint. Soldering iron could also be used.

Did you make the arm holes of the chest piece larger ?

I am foreseeing problems putting my arms down at my sides with the stock pattern. Comparing my chest piece to yours, it appears you may have trimmed yours down a bit to alleviate this problem.

Thanks for the build, I use your photos for reference daily.

I noticed in your foam printed patterns there are still tabs for under folding, just as if you where going to use paper. Did you cut the off or did you leave them? If you left the tabs on how did you work around that when shaping the foam? Thanks

Just cut out what you need in foam. Tabs are not needed for foam building. The program puts them there automatically. Dont just look at the PDF-files. Open the pepakura files in pepakura designer. So you can see where Everything goes.

I've been following you on facebook, and I've not had a chance to say how appreciative I am in you sharing your methods with us.  I'm working on a build myself based on your method.  It's a beautiful build and if I was not over in the states, I'd want to shake your hand...or powerfist lol.  It's a rare person willing to share their methods, and us hardcore costumers (like myself) really appreciate seeing other people's methods.  So thank you very, very much for taking your time to let us all learn!  And thank you for being so open to answering additional questions!

Also, your veteran upgrades are just beautiful!  If you weren't planning on adding a tunic, I'd consider!  It would look very nice with a veteran  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

Very nice work. The armor I have in progress is going to be in a similar scale. And something i've wondered is, Is it possible to sit down at all? or do you usually stay standing?

Excellent upgrades! You've totally earned that promotion  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

If there's any motivating factor for me to start and finish my suit, it's because of the effort and creativity that I've seen you pour into this, Henrik. \m/

Glad you like the armor, and that it inspires more builds! [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

Sitting down? No, not really. Can only bend legs 45 degress (hips or knees). And, since I only troop for an our at the time, usually, sitting down is not necessary. (It can also warp/make dents in the rather soft material. If I did.)

Post by: ragnar blackmane on July 19, 2013, 01:56:00 PM
why can you only troop for such a small amount of time?

Have you tried to sit/on your butt on a higher surface, it seems possible, but you stand a bit taller than I do.  You're at 900 scale, yes?  Mine is 875 legs with 850 body and im only at about 7'4 give or take an inch.

Ragnar: Because it is hot and heavy inside, so breaks are good. On many conventions I switch in and out several times per day from power armour into stormtrooper armor, and back again with short breaks in between.

I wrote a long and angry response to your attitude problem, but I'll just refrain from getting my hands dirty on someone's 3rd post..

If you want a tutorial for this - you're in the wrong place. This is a loving passionate build - where you dedicate all your time, money and sweat to get something right - a great deal of improvisation and initiative has to be taken into consideration - without those, this might not be the right hobby for you.

Ps. Calling this useless - with all the hard work, photos and ducumetning put into Henriks private build - really tells us more about you than anything..

Agreed. We are all here to help each other, not give you a play by play on how to build armour. Henrik has been kind enough to share how he built his suit, and you  go and shit all over it. Be grateful he decided to share at all.

Bottom line, if you don't like the files, don't use them.

Hey Henrik,

Wanted to thank you again for sharing your hard work with us and I've gotten many new ideas and insights on how you figured things out, and answered so many questions I've had regarding how to attach things, and articulate them.

I'm using your bolt pistol files and trying it your way to get a feel for the difference between the pepakura pistol I did before, and out of foam as you did.

And a question about mounting the brackets you used for the grips, is the foam sturdy enough just to be hot glued to the foam, or did you secure them another way for better support?

Thanks again!

Only glue in the guns. It is sturdy enough. The weepons are so light weight. And heve not needed any repairs. You see the wood grip + aluminum "rig" in the photos. (In the armour, similar things also have bolts through the foam to secure them. But that is easy to see in the pictures of the armor build.)
Good luck!

Don't sweat it. Just try to be a bit more cognizant of the work some people have put in to share what they've done. It would have been far easier for Henrik to just post a picture of his finished suit, or nothing at all.

All the pepakura is on whatever size paper you like, just choose in the printer settings and arrange it. The PDF files have the paper sice in the fille name. nd your printer will know. A3 for all armor parts.
Check the text file in the download for assistance for pepakura designer 3.

Thank you.

I printed the arm on both, A4 and A3 and it seems way to big in A3. Normaly my printer says scale down to paper size, but I printed all in original size. I give it a try in A3 more than cutting away more foam cant happen...[img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />

schematics?  that's what Pepurakura IS!~

anyway, About 2 months ago I went and painted one of my forearms with spacewolf grey latex gloss house paint.

The stuff is crazy!  I will never use rattle cans, or the Norwegian Paintbrush to paint the main colors of foam armor again.

You can flex the suit and the paint wont crack like Fusion or american Accents does.  Great idea man to use house paint!

Good it worked! However, I will never use the kind of paint i used again. (Regular indoor water based wall paint.) The propblems with it sticking to itself, and tearing off is horrible. (Two armor pieces pressed together for a while.) Even when clear coated I still have that problem. I recommend regular spray cans.

That is interesting, I started using house paint on mine about half way through.  It is cheaper, but I can see that it does grab and squeak a bit more.  I haven't had it tear yet.  Maybe it was the brand.
Title: Henrik Pilerud's fanmade Blood Angel Space Marine
Post by: ragnar blackmane on August 28, 2013, 09:55:00 PM
must be the brand.  I've never seen that happen, so I tried it.  no sticking at all.  might have to let it cure for the recommended time on the can.  or in AZ 5 minutes.  [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

I'll keep an eye out though for it happening, good looking out!

I'm new to using the Pepakura files (and this forum) I have never built any space marine armour but I do have years of costuming experience. I am really looking forward to starting a suit but I can't figure out how big to make it. I am a big guy (6' 5" and 270 lbs) so I was wondering what number I should set the scale to? If Henrik is 6'0" and the scale is set for 935 for a 7" suit  what should i set it for to get a 7'6" (or bigger) suit? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a guide for that in the my download, in the text file "read this first..". Check that. (It is all simple math. 935 scale = 7 feet, so it is just an equation.)
Title: Henrik Pilerud's fanmade Blood Angel Space Marine
Post by: Worldeater888 on August 29, 2013, 12:56:00 PM
Thanks a lot for the response, I had read it several times but it took two more re-reads of the "scaling the armour" section for it to sink in that 1 cm = 4.4 scale units. I guess that I was thinking that the 935 number was a ratio or a multiplier itself and I was looking for something more complex.

Now that I found the scale I was doing some math. 935 / 4.4 = 212 cm (210 in the description) = 83" or 6' 11". Changing it to 950 would only add 3.4 cm (1.3") to the total height. I am 195cm and Henrik is 183 so I am 6.5% taller to start with. If I want the suit to be 6.5% bigger than his it should be at about 15 cm taller or 7'5" total. In order to get a nice even 7'6" it looks like I would have to use about a 1000 scale. (7'6"= 90" x 2.54 = 228 cm x 4.4 = 1005.) Let me know if there is some flaw in my thinking here.

One more quick stupid question for Henrik, I was trying to figure out the height of the platforms under your shoes from your pictures. (and therefore figure out how tall mine should be) It looks like about 25 cm, Is this correct?
Title: Henrik Pilerud's fanmade Blood Angel Space Marine
Post by: ragnar blackmane on August 29, 2013, 01:43:00 PM
you are not completely correct.  I am using 875 scale and Im standing at 7'3
Title: Henrik Pilerud's fanmade Blood Angel Space Marine
Post by: Sylgian on August 29, 2013, 01:57:00 PM
There are many things that will affect the final height. Your build scale is important but depending on your stilt height and armor gaps your height will change. Heck.. My helmet even adds inches My own build is 935 scale, I am 6', and my final height is over 7ft. This is slightly taller than Henrik even though we used the same scale.

Many factors to consider, probably too many to be extremely accurate in calculating final height. Best we can do is estimate.

Henrik you are my hero. We should stop jacking this thread now.

Crazy thought.  As you have already added sound effects to your armor for walking, why not add some to your bolter and bolt pistol.  Maybe add a contact switch to the trigger and a speaker somewhere like the magazine.  Rip some electronics from a kid's light and sound gun for the tech.  I had thought about that for a heavy bolter design I was building for paintball.

It is because your batteries are low on power. Just changes to a new set of batteries, and problem is solved.

There are directions in the download. Check the Read this first-file.

Thanks for the reply.  I read through the entire file a few times.  And i'm sure i'll read it many more throughout my build, but the only scaling / converting i see is in the pep program (which is great)  but i was wondering about the files that you only have in PDF format.  Not sure if there is a a way to scale those across smaller paper or not.

Unless i am just completely missing something, which is possible.

If you use even the free version of the pepakura designer under "Settings" and "Print and Paper Settings" you can change A3 to Letter format in that menu. without a key code you won't be able to save the change but you can still print it out without having to save. you dont have to change the scale either assuming you want 935 scale templates

I just tested this myself and it appears to work fine

Oh yes, i understand that, and have done that for other patterns.  But he has some fantastic patterns for misc items in PDF format, that are not pep files, but they are setup for A3 paper.

You could import each page of the PDF(s) in to photoshop or illustrator and put them on to a new canvas that would more than fit them in a multiple of letter (For instance, one page of A3 would be 2 x 2 letter pages, to fit without any kind of rearranging. Rearranging would be easier in illustrator.), and use the slice tool to cut them up. Then you can use save for web, and save each as an image. It's not a PDF output, but it would be letter sized. I hope that makes sense, I typed it up while trying to figure it out myself. Attached is an example of it being done with the grenade PDF

Also this is kind of dependent on having photoshop or something that can edit PDFs as images.

Thanks brother!  I mentioned it to my girlfriend shortly after posting it, and she said pretty much the same thing.  I'm not too familiar with illustrator, but she is a graphic designer so i'm sure she can teach me :)

thanks for the help!

I printed them up much like Caramel suggested. I used the poster size setting in the printer options in Adobe reader and printed four letter size to one A3 sheet, then taped them together and cut the patterns out.

A new video has been added to the playlist (see first post). An appearance at a 40K event at a local toy store.

I have done updates to the download in the first post:

* I have updated the building suggestions in the space marine build download.

* I have sorted the pictures and made it more accessible to reduce confusion.

* Mega Stomp BATTLE (The new one) modification added.

* Also added more 40K pepekura files (and 3D models) I have found around the web, for those building related stuff.

Small upgrade to the download, to the build pictures for the Bolt Pistol electronics and generally for the Mega Stomp Battle addition.

Hey Pilerud!
Really nice work!
Are these only foam + glue + paint, or are there some more addons to make it more sturdy, like resins or fiberglass?
Does it hold its shape?

This is freaking amazing. You are the reason I registered an account here.

I have plans to make my own once I scrounge up enough money and parts.

Would you (or anyone else here) have any tips for modifying this armour into a Space Wolf pattern?

Simple. Add Space Wolf details dude. Find a miniature/image that you like, and make your armour look like that.

The patterns are "blank", ie not Chapter specific (even though I believe they are modelled off an Ultramarine). You can make them any Chapter you want.

Hope this helps.

This is as old as time itself, but I'd just like to say thanks Pilerud, you've done something strange and wonderful amongst me and my friends.

We all saw this a few days ago in the videos, found the tutorial(esque) stuff and all decided "Fuck it, let's make a goddamn Imperial Fist squad!"

There are five of us, so four battle brothers and one sergeant, aces!

Long story short, you're a champion, me and mates are doing Imperial Fist squad now, you're still a champion.

Sounds great! Do sent a picture, or even better, a video(link) when you are up and moving. Groups of 5 space marines are extremely rare! :D

Let me start by saying Thank You for all the information and inspiration.  With your help I might get a rough Marine built in time for Halloween.

Now on to my DOH!! moment.  Not knowing much about scale and such I printed off the PDF files directly to Letter sized paper.  After knocking out the boots and shins I noticed something Important....Its a Mini-Marine.  I am 5'6" and its going to fit me perfectly without use of Stilts...I have since played around more with the paper size in Pepakura and I can get it printed correctly the second time around.  With any luck I'll build both versions someday.

So if you wish to build a smaller version just do what I did
